Andre Onana Selects Man United Over Cameroon in the 2023 AFCON

The agreement between Cameroon’s FA and goalkeeper, Andre Onana, is currently confusing football fans in the country.

One of the key players on the Cameroon national team right now, Andre Onana is one of the players predicted to lead his team to the 2023 AFCON championship.

A day after the biggest football game in Africa, AFCON, kicked off, Onana reportedly agreed to stay with his Premier League side, Manchester United, according to allegations that went viral.

It should be noted that Premier League clubs were required to release the players invited to the competition by January 1st at the latest, unless a specific arrangement was reached between a player’s club and their country’s FA regarding a player returning later.

A few players have been allowed to return later than expected, but there is no record in the tournament’s history of Andre Onana being given such permission.

The 27-year-old goalie is anticipated to remain at Old Trafford for Manchester United’s FA Cup third-round match on Monday, January 8, against Wigan Athletic, according to information obtained by Naija News.

Not only is that hilarious, but Onana is also scheduled to play in Manchester United’s Premier League match against Tottenham Hotspur on January 14, which is one day after the 2023 AFCON officially begins.

The goalie is scheduled to take a 7-hour flight from England to Ivory Coast following the FA Cup match, which is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m., in order to connect with Cameroon.

This means that on January 15, less than a day after his arrival at the camp, he is anticipated to play in Cameroon’s 2023 AFCON opening against Guinea.

Assume that this agreement is upheld and Cameroon—who is in Group C with the Gambia, Guinea, and the defending AFCON champion, Senegal—is unable to advance to the competition’s next stage. Andre Onana won’t miss a game at Old Trafford in that scenario.

After Cameroon’s last group stage match against the Gambia on January 23, he will depart for England and be eligible to play in Manchester United’s FA Cup round of 16 match on January 27 provided they defeat Wigan in the third round.

However, given their five AFCON championships, Cameroon is likely to advance past the group stage.
