Police said Ward, 43, was arrested Monday in the North Hollywood area.
He was being held on Tuesday on $250,000 bail, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s inmate search website.
Police did not immediately provide information about the alleged crime, and it was not immediately clear whether Mr.
Ward had an attorney who could speak on his behalf.
A call from The Associated Press seeking information from police was not immediately returned Tuesday night.
Police told NBC News that Ward is suspected of robbing five stores, including a gas station, and that the 6-foot-tall, 230-pound former player did not use a weapon in the alleged crimes.

Ward, who grew up in Southern California, was drafted in the seventh round by the New York Jets in 2004, but he was released without appearing in a regular season game.
He played for the Giants from 2004 to 2008, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2009, the Houston Texans from 2010 to 2011, and in 2012 he retired from the NFL.
He was part of a formidable trio of running backs with the Giants, along with Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw, nicknamed “Earth, Wind and Fire.
” He was with the Giants when they defeated Tom Brady’s undefeated New England Patriots 17-14 in Super Bowl XLII in 2008.
However, Ward did not participate in the game due to a broken leg.
Ward’s best NFL season was 2008, when he ran for 1,025 yards on 182 carries and two touchdowns.
Ward was signed by the Buccaneers to a four-year, $17 million contract in 2009, but he was waived the following year and went to work with the Texans.
In his 93-game NFL career, Ward had 2,628 rushing yards on 551 attempts and 12 touchdowns.
