The New York Knicks signed veteran forward Taj Gibson last month as a way to provide a physical presence with Mitchell Robinson sidelined for the season.

About that? New York surprisingly waived Gibson on Sunday, according to Fred Katz of The Athletic.

Gibson, 38, averaged just 1.4 points and 1.8 rebounds in 10 games since signing with the Knicks back on Dec. 15.

New York’s decision to sign Gibson came after Robinson was lost for the season due to an ankle injury the big man suffered back on Dec. 8. But he was not able to crack the rotation.

For the Knicks, this is all about creating roster flexibility moving forward on the season after they acquired three players in the blockbuster OG Anunoby trade.

Said deal included the acquisition of forward Precious Achiuwa. That pretty much made Taj Gibson expendable in the grand scheme of things.

As for Gibson, the veteran played for New York from 2019-22. He was seen as a veteran presence for head coach Tom Thibodeau who had been with Gibson during stops with both the Chicago Bulls and Minnesota Timberwolves.
