Report: Panthers Block Jaguars Request to Interview Ejiro Evero For DC

The Jacksonville Jaguars are looking for a new defensive coordinator, and we now know at least one name that they are interested in. According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Carolina Panthers blocked the Jaguars’ request to interview defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero for the same position on the Jaguars’ staff. Evero was hired by the Panthers last offseason as a part of Frank Reich’s staff, which means he is still under contract in Carolina. Carolina can thereby block any lateral interviews, just like the Jaguars did last year with Press Taylor and the Baltimore Ravens.

This doesn’t mean Evero can’t still speak to the Jaguars later down the road. It is completely dependent on who the Panthers hire as head coach. Evero may be retained on the next Panthers coach’s staff, of course, but if he isn’t, then he could speak with the Jaguars. The Jaguars are looking for a new defensive coordinator after firing former coordinator Mike Caldwell on Monday night. The Jaguars also fired seven other defensive assistants, leaving only three of Pederson’s 11 defensive staff members left. Evero spent last year with the Panthers and was the defensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos in 2022. Before then, Evero worked with defensive backs and served as the passing game coordinator with the Rams.

One tie Evero could have to the Jaguars: general manager Trent Baalke. Evero worked for the 49ers as an offensive assistant and then later as a defensive assistant from 2011-2015, overlapping with Baalke’s time there as general manager.
