The Shocking Truth About: Paul Merson’s Suggestion Mistake’s On The 27-Year Old….

Everton defender Mason Holgate is close to completing a move to Sheffield United on deadline day amid reports that Leeds United could make a move – and Paul Merson thinks he’s making a mistake.

Holgate, 27, has been out on loan at Southampton this season – but has only played seven times during the first part of 23-24. It was reported early on deadline day that he was likely to cancel his Saints loan.

And, that Leeds could be tempted to bring him to Elland Road. However, Sheffield United have moved first – with Everton boss Sean Dyche confirming that Holgate is closing in on a move to Bramall Lane.

With Dyche’s quotes put to Merson on Sky Sports this afternoon (February 1, 2.55PM), the Arsenal icon reacted by questioning why Holgate would want to go to Sheffield United over a top Championship club.

“No disrespect but if I was Holgate I would rather go to one of the top four in the Championship, the way they are playing and be in a winning team and want to win football matches, have a chance of going up.

“It probably works for him at Sheffield United because he will be under the cosh at every minute of the day. It probably helps his defending but for me I’d rather be winning matches than losing every week.”

If Holgate is going to be getting regular game time at Sheffield United, then why would he want to go to a Championship club in Leeds? Holgate is not going to start for Leeds, whereas he might do in Sheffield.

He would have been a smart signing for Leeds given his versatility in defence, and that it would suit all parties. But, it appears he is going to Bramall Lane and join Chris Wilder’s fight to keep the Blades up.
