New York Mets owner sends powerful message to fans about his stance on re-signing All-Star Pete Alonso

For New York Mets fans upset that the organization has not gotten anywhere close to re-signing star slugger Pete Alonso, the team’s owner sent a strong message Friday on how he feels about the three-time All-Star.

One of the biggest storylines during the offseason for New York has been about the future of first baseman Pete Alonso. The homegrown star is in the final year of his contract and is set to hit free agency next winter. In most cases, it would seem like a no-brainer for the organization to re-sign the three-time All-Star, however, there has been no progress in extension talks.

Instead of getting closer to locking the 29-year-old up to a new long-term deal, there have actually been rumblings that the organization has shopped around to see his value on the trade block. It has frustrated Mets fans because while Alonso’s game has notable weaknesses, players who can hit over 40 home runs a season with ease don’t come around often.

New York Mets owner on Pete Alonso: ‘We want to keep him’

Mets owner Steve Cohen has been quiet when it comes to Alonso, but during an appearance on “The Meet at the Apple” podcast, the billionaire let it be known he really does want to keep his first baseman in orange and blue after this season.

“We want to keep him,” Cohen said definitively. “He’s an important part of our team today and hopefully in the future. We know the fans feel strongly about him, and I’m not tone-deaf. I totally understand the fans’ love of Pete. I hope he hits 55 home runs and makes it so difficult on me in free agency. I would call that a great outcome.”

Alonso is represented by super-agent Scott Boras, who is likely not open to a team-friendly deal during the limited contract talks he and the team have had so far.
