SADNEWS:’He Would Have Walked’ – Barry Ferguson shares…
Rangers: Barry Ferguson makes Lewis Ferguson Ibrox transfer admission in new £20m verdict
Rangers never showed any interest in signing Bologna midfielder Lewis Ferguson despite his obvious links to Ibrox, according to Barry Ferguson.
The 24-year-old Scottish midfielder has impressed in Italy since moving from Aberdeen in 2022 and has become a key part of Thiago Motta’s side, starting 25 of the 26 matches in Serie A so far this season.
Because of his ties with Ibrox, with his dad, Derek and his uncle Barry ex-Rangers stars, the former Gers captain insists that his nephew would have happily joined the Light Blues ranks had there been any transfer interest.
Speaking on The Go Radio Football Show (1 March, 20:20) he said: “I’m asked so often by Rangers fans, how did we not sign your nephew? There was no interest, he would have walked there, he would have walked to Rangers.
“You look now, he went over to Italy, had a good first season and now he’s gone up a level and now you’re talking £20million upwards.”
Who will Rangers and Philippe Clement sign in the summer transfer window?
It is a shame that Rangers allowed such an impressive young talent to slip through their net when Ferguson was right under their nose. Missing out on future Scottish stars has become a regular problem in recent years.
Some pundits have suggested that there is some snobbery around buying players from other Premiership sides and while that is open to debate, both Old Firm clubs have been too slow to act in the local market.
Hopefully, Rangers will learn from their mistakes and not continue to ignore the players around them under Philippe Clement in the future. Buying from abroad is fine, but there are some special players already plying their trade in Scotland.
