Mark Selby looked uncomfortable in an awkward moment live on BBC Sport shortly after he crashed out of the World Snooker Championship against qualifier Joe O’Connor. The four-time world champion fuelled speculation about his future after suffering a first-round exit for just the fifth time in his storied career.
Selby’s struggles on and off the table this season have conjured the prospect of retirement, and he set those suggestions ablaze by confirming he had thought about calling it quits earlier this month.
The 40-year-old showed glimpses of his quality against O’Connor at the Crucible on Monday, opening with a break of 112 before later cutting the deficit to 8-5 with a 91.
But it was a match to remember for O’Connor, the tournament’s only debutant this year, who was already in dreamland before a ball was potted, having idolised Selby growing up.
He showed no signs of letting up after a dominant Sunday session, which he won 7-2, to book his spot in the second round with a 10-6 victory.
