Patty Gasso has the Oklahoma Sooners softball team on the verge of achieving a four-peat championship, a feat not pursued since UCLA’s attempt 33 years ago.

When the current Oklahoma Sooners softball team reached the position they now hold, their head coach Patty Gasso was just a budding junior college coach. Back in 1991, powerhouse UCLA was on the verge of making history by potentially winning a fourth consecutive national title. However, they fell short in the Women’s College World Series finals against Arizona. Gasso, then in her second year coaching at Long Beach City College near UCLA, watched as the Bruins dominated the softball scene.

Now, 33 years later, Gasso leads the Sooners, who are dominating the softball world, aiming to achieve what UCLA couldn’t. The No. 2 seeded Sooners defeated the No. 15 seed Florida State 4-2 in the NCAA Norman Super Regional, securing their spot in the Women’s College World Series. In Oklahoma City next week, they will strive for an unprecedented fourth straight national championship.
