Warriors Expected to Part Ways With $22.5 Million Starter From Title Team

Although they are known for keeping their championship cores together, it now seems likely that the Golden State Warriors will part ways with a starter from their most recent championship squad.

During his appearance on the Warriors Plus Minus podcast on Thursday, June 6, Tim Kawakami of The Athletic revealed that center Kevon Looney will most likely be released by the Dubs this offseason.

“I believe the most likely scenario is that he gets cut, gets paid $3 million by the Warriors, and goes looking for another job, which he will find in this league,” Kawakami remarked. “Teams will want him, even though they will only want a very small amount of him.”

Kawakami suggested that Looney could end up as a backup for the rebuilding San Antonio Spurs or the reigning NBA champion Denver Nuggets.

During his appearance on the Warriors Plus Minus podcast on Thursday, June 6, Tim Kawakami of The Athletic revealed that center Kevon Looney will most likely be released by the Dubs this offseason.

Looney is heading into the final season of a three-year, $22.5 million contract that is partially guaranteed, according to Bleacher Report. His salary cap hit will cost the Warriors $8 million in 2024-25, though the price will be exponentially more with luxury tax penalties if Golden State can’t get under the cap ceiling this offseason.
