Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has shared his thoughts on Sunderland’s 1-0 pre-season defeat to Leeds United, offering measured advice to Black Cats boss Régis Le Bris as the club prepares for a demanding Premier League and Europa League campaign.
Speaking after the result in the United States, Guardiola acknowledged that pre-season results should never be over-analysed, but used the game to highlight important lessons for a side stepping up to two major competitions.
Guardiola said:
“Losing 1-0 in pre-season is not a disaster. It is information. What matters is how you respond and what you learn from it. Sunderland will face many games like this — tight, physical, and decided by small details.
Régis is a coach who understands structure and organisation. That will be vital. When you play in the Premier League and in Europe, the schedule is heavy. You need a clear identity and the discipline to stick to it even when the legs are tired.”
The City boss continued with more specific guidance for Le Bris:
“Defend well first. Make yourselves difficult to break down. In the Premier League, and especially in European competition, the teams that stay solid for long periods give themselves a chance. Then, when you have the ball, be brave in the right moments. Don’t force it, but don’t be afraid either.
The biggest challenge will be managing the squad. You will need depth and rotation. Pre-season is the time to test players and find the right balance. One defeat changes nothing if the work continues with clarity.”
Guardiola finished with a note of encouragement:
“Sunderland have quality and a coach who knows how to build. If they stay organised, keep improving, and protect their energy across the season, they can compete. The Premier League and Europa League will test them every week, but that is also the beauty of it. I respect what they are trying to do.”
The comments have already drawn attention among Sunderland supporters, many of whom see Guardiola’s words as both realistic and supportive. While the 1-0 loss to Leeds was disappointing, the broader message from one of football’s most successful coaches has been received as a useful reminder of what lies ahead.
