Leeds United entered the January transfer window with a clear mission: fix the attack and give themselves the best possible chance of surviving in the Premier League. Tactical tweaks, squad limitations, and the pressure of top-flight football have forced the club into decisive action — but one highly anticipated striker move is now on the brink of collapse.
The Whites have already taken a step forward by securing a creative attacking reinforcement on loan, adding much-needed versatility in the final third. That signing helps, but it doesn’t fully solve Leeds’ biggest problem: goals.
A recent shift to a 5-3-2 system has placed even greater responsibility on the strikers. With fewer attackers on the pitch, efficiency in front of goal has become non-negotiable. Every missed chance now feels magnified, and the lack of reliable depth up front has only increased the urgency to bring in a proven finisher.
Manager Daniel Farke has made it clear that Leeds are still open to adding one more forward before the transfer window shuts. Behind the scenes, however, reality is setting in — and one long-rumoured target is increasingly looking like a gamble Leeds simply can’t afford to take.
Injuries, fitness concerns, and inconsistent form have all combined to cool Leeds’ interest. While the striker in question possesses the physical profile to thrive in Farke’s system, the timing couldn’t be worse. With recovery delays pushing a potential return well into February, any January deal would come with major risk.
Leeds are fighting for survival now, not in a month’s time. The Premier League demands instant impact, and signing a forward who may need weeks to regain sharpness and adapt to the league’s intensity could prove disastrous.
Add to that a hefty £17m price tag and patchy attacking numbers this season, and the warning signs are impossible to ignore. Leeds need a striker who can hit the ground running — not one who arrives injured, short of rhythm, and uncertain of his role.
Walking away from this deal may frustrate some fans, but it could ultimately be the smartest decision the club makes this January. Avoiding a costly mistake might be just as important as making a marquee signing.
