By the end of June, Leeds United could find themselves with just one senior goalkeeper under contract, with three current shot-stoppers expected to depart.
Karl Darlow, Alex Cairns, and Illan Meslier are all set to see their contracts expire at the end of the month. Many Leeds supporters believe the club should offer Darlow a new deal after his impressive performances this season.
The experienced Welshman stepped in as first-choice goalkeeper after taking over from Lucas Perri. Leeds signed the Brazilian last summer in the belief that he could solve their goalkeeping issues, but a combination of injuries and costly mistakes eventually led Daniel Farke to drop him from the starting lineup.
From the middle of the campaign onwards, Perri was largely restricted to cup appearances, while Darlow remained between the posts as Leeds successfully secured Premier League survival.
Leeds United should consider move for Manchester United goalkeeper
Everything points towards Illan Meslier leaving Elland Road. The Frenchman has reportedly been seeking a fresh start since losing his place during Leeds’ promotion-winning season. Alex Cairns could also move on, although a return in a coaching or U21 role remains a possibility.
Darlow’s future remains uncertain, but some fans are optimistic that he could follow Ethan Ampadu in committing his future to the club.
Leeds may have an ideal solution in Manchester United goalkeeper Radek Vitek. According to several reports, the 22-year-old is open to leaving Old Trafford this summer in search of regular football.
Meanwhile, reports around Elland Road suggest the club are not completely convinced by Lucas Perri, meaning they could enter the transfer market for another goalkeeper.
Why Radek Vitek would be a smart signing
Vitek enjoyed an outstanding loan spell at Bristol City last season, establishing himself as one of the Championship’s standout goalkeepers. He recorded 12 clean sheets and swept the club’s end-of-season awards, winning Player of the Year, Young Player of the Year, and Players’ Player of the Year.
According to BBC Sport, the Czech goalkeeper is determined to continue playing first-team football. However, with his Manchester United contract running until 2028, securing a permanent deal will not be straightforward.
Even so, if Vitek pushes for a move, Leeds’ owners, the 49ers Enterprises, should seriously explore the opportunity.
With several goalkeeping contracts expiring this summer, Leeds are almost certain to strengthen that position, and Radek Vitek deserves to be high on their shortlist.
