Leeds United tipped to sign £25m England international after major transfer call

Leeds United appear increasingly likely to strengthen their goalkeeping options this summer as uncertainty continues to surround several key situations.

The club remain in talks with Karl Darlow over a new contract and are eager for the experienced Welsh goalkeeper to extend his stay at Elland Road for at least another season.

Despite Leeds’ desire to keep Darlow, doubts remain over his future. Manchester United are reportedly considering a move for the veteran shot-stopper to act as an experienced backup to Senne Lammens, leaving Leeds uncertain about whether they can hold onto him.

As a result, the Whites could be forced to accelerate their search for a new goalkeeper rather than waiting for clarity on Darlow’s situation.

There is growing speculation that Leeds may soon pursue an experienced Premier League goalkeeper, having already been linked with several established names during the transfer window.

Leeds United backed to move for Aaron Ramsdale

Leeds are actively searching for goalkeeping reinforcements and have been strongly linked with Newcastle United goalkeeper Nick Pope.

However, interest from Ipswich Town has complicated matters, while reports suggest Pope is not currently one of Leeds’ priority targets.

Former Premier League scout Mick Brown believes Leeds should instead consider a move for Aaron Ramsdale, who recently returned to Southampton after his loan spell at Newcastle came to an end.

Brown insists Ramsdale has already proven himself at Premier League level and simply needs a club willing to place trust in him.

“Leeds are in the market for a new goalkeeper, so they will be aware of his availability,” Brown told Football Insider.

“Ramsdale is expected to leave Southampton, and it’s obvious he won’t be staying at Newcastle, so a club like Leeds could be tempted to take a chance on him.

“He hasn’t had the best season. It felt like he never truly established himself in the Newcastle side, so he’ll be desperate for regular football.

“Not too long ago he was an England international, which shows the quality he possesses if given the opportunity.

“If Leeds don’t sign Nick Pope, and I think that’s likely, then his teammate from last season could certainly come into the conversation.

“Ramsdale is a good goalkeeper. He may not be the elite-level option Leeds would ideally want, but he could certainly improve their current goalkeeping department.”

A move would carry significant risk

Ramsdale remains ambitious about reclaiming his place in the England setup and will be targeting regular first-team football next season to boost his chances.

However, a move for the former Arsenal goalkeeper would come with a degree of risk. His reputation has suffered over the past two seasons, and his stock is no longer as high as it once was.

He was part of the Southampton side that suffered relegation from the Premier League and struggled to displace Nick Pope during his time at Newcastle.

Newcastle’s decision to recruit another goalkeeper this summer also suggests they had little interest in keeping Ramsdale beyond his loan spell.

While he appears certain to leave Southampton in search of a fresh start, Leeds should carefully assess whether he is the right fit before making a move. That said, his Premier League experience and proven ability still make him a potentially attractive option for Daniel Farke’s side.
