Bidding war looms as Leeds United close in on club-record deal

Leeds United are reportedly pushing aggressively to land Ousmane Diomande in what could become a club-record transfer, with the Sporting Lisbon defender emerging as one of their top defensive targets this window.

The 22-year-old has been identified as a priority signing by Leeds, who are eager to make a major statement in the market as they look to strengthen key areas of Daniel Farke’s squad.

Reports suggest contact has already been made with the player’s representatives, and a verbal understanding is believed to be in place regarding a potential move to Elland Road. However, no formal agreement has yet been reached with Sporting.

Diomande is understood to have a €69m release clause in his contract, although Sporting are reportedly open to negotiating a fee closer to £44m. Even so, interest from multiple clubs is expected to trigger a bidding war.

Chelsea and Bournemouth are also monitoring the situation closely, while Italian side Como—managed by Cesc Fàbregas—have reportedly entered the race as well. Leeds, Chelsea and Bournemouth would not be able to offer European football next season, while Como’s Champions League qualification could become a key advantage in negotiations.

Despite Leeds being early movers and holding positive dialogue with the player’s camp, the growing list of suitors means the deal remains far from straightforward.

For Leeds, the appeal is clear. With uncertainty still surrounding defensive options such as Pascal Struijk, signing a player of Diomande’s calibre would immediately strengthen the back line and provide long-term stability.

More importantly, it would signal serious intent from the 49ers ownership group. Beating established Premier League and European clubs to one of the most highly rated young defenders in Europe would underline Leeds’ ambition to move beyond survival and build towards a higher level of competitiveness.

For now, Leeds remain in the race—but the battle for Diomande is only just beginning.
