United States media deliver brutal verdict on Leeds United star after World Cup nightmare

Brenden Aaronson was handed his first start of the World Cup on Thursday night, but it turned into a night to forget for the Leeds United midfielder.

After failing to feature in the United States’ opening two group-stage matches, Aaronson was given the chance to impress against Turkey after Mauricio Pochettino rotated his side with qualification for the knockout rounds already secured.

Aaronson started on the left wing, but the United States slumped to a disappointing defeat against a Turkey side that had already been eliminated from the tournament.

The Leeds man endured a frustrating evening, with his display coming under heavy criticism from the American media.

United States media tear into Brenden Aaronson

Aaronson’s biggest moment came when he missed a golden opportunity with the goal at his mercy. He also struggled to create meaningful chances and lacked quality in the final third.

Those shortcomings are familiar to Leeds supporters, with the 25-year-old often praised for his relentless work rate but criticised for failing to consistently produce goals and assists.

NBC Sports handed Aaronson a 5/10 rating, writing:

“Butchered a prime chance to make it 3-2 and that pretty much sums up the day for the Leeds United energy man.”

USA Today also gave him a 5/10 and said:

“Everyone knows Aaronson brings energy to the team.

What he lacks is final product, and that once again proved to be true as he missed an open goal on a rebound and failed to connect on some important passes going forward.”

ESPN was even harsher, awarding Aaronson just 4/10. Only goalkeeper Matt Turner received a lower rating.

Their assessment read:

“There were a few moments when he facilitated some attacks and even earned a corner within the first 30 minutes.

But he also had times when he struggled to carve a place for himself. An example of that came in the 71st minute when he had the ball on the edge of the box before losing possession.”

Leeds face an important decision

Aaronson is entering the final year of his Leeds United contract, with no indication that negotiations over a new deal have begun.

That leaves Leeds with an important decision to make this summer. If the club does not see him as part of their long-term plans, they may have to consider selling him rather than risk losing him on a free transfer next year.

Competition for places is also increasing.

Harry Wilson’s expected arrival would give Daniel Farke another option in the attacking midfield role, while Leeds continue to pursue Julian Brandt, whose arrival would almost certainly push Aaronson further down the pecking order.

With fresh competition arriving and his contract winding down, the coming weeks could prove pivotal in deciding Aaronson’s future at Elland Road.
