Keir Starmer Set to Announce Major UK Law Change for England’s World Cup Match vs Mexico
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is set to introduce an emergency law ahead of England’s upcoming World Cup match vs Mexico on Sunday night. The Round of 16 kicks-off at 1am on Monday, July 6, which equates to 6pm locally, where an in-form El Tri will welcome the Three Lions to an intimidating Aztec Stadium.
Thomas Tuchel’s side just about managed to turn things around tournament debutants DR Congo on Wednesday evening, with Harry Kane scoring twice in the final 20 minutes to spare England blushes after their minnow opposition took the lead in just the seventh minute in Atlanta, Georgia.
In the next round, they face their toughest obstacle yet, with Mexico having not only won all their matches up until now, but also having done so without conceding a single goal. They are the first nation to achieve that feat since Italy in 1990.
UK Set For Emergency Laws For England vs Mexico World Cup Tie
The UK Prime Minister is set to leave his position on July 9, but has won back some people’s trust in anticipation of one of his final decisions at Number 10 Downing Street.
That’s because pubs could now be allowed to stay open until 5am on Monday morning, according to several reports, with the former Labour Party leader expected to make an announcement on Friday.
As per talkSPORT, current laws mean venues can only extend hours until 2am for any fixtures that start by 10pm. While the Home Office previously granted pubs special dispensation to extend licensing hour for the tournament, the late-night Mexico clash had not qualified.
That meant landlords had to submit a ‘Temporary Event Notice’ to their local council to remain open until 3:30am, in case the match is forced into extra-time or penalties. However, some venues had their applications rejected because they failed to submit them within the ‘five-working days’ window.
The Secretary of State for Communities, Steve Reed, has written to local authorities across the country to urge them to approve these last-minute applications.
Thomas Tuchel Urges Schools To Let Kids Take Monday Off
Even the England manager has encouraged parents to allow their children to stay up to watch the game. Thomas Tuchel said: “Write an excuse for school and let them watch. There’s so much school to go to, but the World Cup is every four years. Let them watch.
“There will be a big match in four days, and we need the support of everyone, especially the children.”
However, skills minister Baroness Jacqui Smith did not agree with the German. She responded to his comments: “I don’t want to be a killjoy here, but I’ll tell you what the biggest killjoy is – young people who then don’t have the learning to be able to go on and do what they need to do in life.
I quite understand if people want to watch the match, including young people, I will be. I’ll be having a little disco nap in the afternoon and I’ll be celebrating our victory the next morning when I go into work, looking obviously as fresh as a daisy.”
