Jamie Carragher Singles Out Nottingham Forest Star and Says ‘What’s the Point’ in Ruthless Criticism

Jamie Carragher left the Sky Sports studio in no doubt about where he stands after watching Nottingham Forest’s impressive 2-0 pre-season victory over Brest.

The former Liverpool defender, never one to shy away from strong opinions, delivered a passionate and surprising defence of Oliver Glasner’s side — and singled out one Forest player in particular after a performance that clearly caught his eye.

Speaking in the aftermath of the Reds’ dominant display against the Ligue 1 outfit at the City Ground, Carragher turned the conversation on its head. Instead of the usual measured analysis, he went on the front foot.

“I’ve been watching this Nottingham Forest team closely,” Carragher began. “People have been quick to write them off before a ball has even been kicked in the Premier League. What’s the point in that kind of ruthless criticism when the evidence on the pitch is telling a different story?”

The comment immediately turned heads.

Carragher was referring to the growing narrative that Forest, under new head coach Oliver Glasner, would struggle to adapt and find consistency in the top flight. Many pundits had questioned whether the squad had enough quality or cohesion. After watching them comfortably beat a strong Brest side with goals from Chris Wood and Luca Netz, Carragher was having none of it.

He reserved special praise for the standout performer on the night — Luca Netz, who was widely regarded as man of the match after a superb all-round display.

“That lad Netz was outstanding,” Carragher continued. “The way he got up and down the pitch, the quality of his delivery, winning the penalty and then finishing so well himself… that’s Premier League quality. You don’t just switch that on overnight. There’s real talent in this Forest side, and people need to start recognising it. For a player to come in and dominate like that against decent opposition tells you everything.”

Carragher’s tone was unusually warm when discussing Glasner’s project. The Sky Sports star was unequivocal in his support for what he is seeing at the City Ground.

“Oliver has them organised, they look fit, they look hungry, and they’re playing with belief,” he said. “That’s not easy to create. A lot of teams come into a new season under a new manager and look unsure of themselves. This Forest side doesn’t look unsure at all. They’re going into games wanting to impose themselves. That’s the difference.”

The victory over Brest was the perfect illustration. Forest controlled large periods of the match, pressed with intensity, and showed a clinical edge in front of goal. Wood opened the scoring from the penalty spot after Netz was fouled, before the German full-back doubled the advantage with a well-taken finish. The performance provided a positive end to pre-season and clear signs of progress under the new coach.

Carragher, however, kept coming back to the bigger picture.

“What’s the point in writing a team off before they’ve even started?” he asked again. “I’ve seen enough over the years to know that organised, well-coached sides with a clear identity can cause problems for anyone. Forest look like they have that. The recruitment has been smart, the manager knows what he wants, and the players are buying into it.”

He went further, suggesting that some of the early-season criticism directed at Glasner and his squad had been unfair and premature.

“There’s this idea that because they’ve changed managers or had a quiet summer they should just accept mid-table or worse,” Carragher said. “That’s nonsense. Oliver has been in this game long enough. He knows what the Premier League demands. And from what I saw against Brest, especially from Netz, the players are ready to meet that demand.”

The former England international also highlighted the importance of confidence at this stage of the season. Pre-season results do not always translate into league form, but the manner of Forest’s performance, and in particular Netz’s influential display, clearly left an impression on him.

“You can tell when a team believes in what it’s doing,” he explained. “The distances they covered, the way they recovered the ball, the willingness to play forward — those are signs of a group that trusts the manager’s methods. That doesn’t happen by accident. And when a player like Netz can produce a man-of-the-match performance, it gives everyone a lift.”

For Forest supporters, Carragher’s words will feel like a significant moment. Hearing a high-profile pundit of his stature push back against the negativity, while specifically highlighting Luca Netz’s contribution, carries real weight.

Glasner himself has repeatedly spoken about the need for intensity, organisation and belief as Forest prepare for the challenge ahead. Their Premier League campaign begins with a home game against Leeds United, but the performance against Brest, combined with Carragher’s ringing endorsement of both the team and their standout performer, will only strengthen the sense that this squad is ready for the fight.

Carragher was not finished. In one final, pointed remark, he addressed those still doubting Forest’s credentials.

“You can criticise all you want from the sidelines,” he said. “But when a team goes out and performs like that against a side of Brest’s quality, and a player like Netz can produce a man-of-the-match performance, you have to give them credit. What’s the point in ruthless criticism when the football is saying something completely different? Give them a chance. They might just surprise a few people.”

For Oliver Glasner, his players, and the Nottingham Forest supporters, those words will be remembered.

Jamie Carragher has spoken. And this time, he is firmly in the Reds’ corner — with Luca Netz leading the way.
