Joao Gomes is on the verge of becoming an Aston Villa player after leaving Wolverhampton Wanderers’ pre-season training camp to complete his transfer.
According to talkSPORT, Aston Villa have agreed a deal worth £35 million with Wolves for the Brazil international, who is now set to undergo a medical on Friday before finalising the move to Villa Park.
Villa moved swiftly for Gomes after selling Belgian midfielder Youri Tielemans to Manchester United for £35 million, immediately reinvesting the entire fee to secure the 24-year-old.
Gomes had been heavily linked with a move to Atletico Madrid, with the Spanish club reportedly prepared to pay around £39 million. However, the transfer collapsed in recent days after Atletico ended negotiations. Reports suggest the breakdown was linked to disagreements involving Gomes’ agent, Jorge Mendes.
The Brazilian joined Wolves from Flamengo in 2023 and established himself as one of the club’s standout performers. He made 130 appearances in all competitions, including 114 Premier League matches, earning widespread praise for his consistency despite the club’s difficult campaign.
Although Wolves suffered relegation to the Championship after finishing bottom of the Premier League last season, Gomes remained one of the few bright spots, attracting interest from several top clubs across Europe.
His imminent move to Aston Villa offers him the opportunity to remain in the Premier League while strengthening Unai Emery’s midfield ahead of the new season.
Villa’s transfer business is expected to continue, with the club also pursuing Bayern Munich midfielder Joao Palhinha on a loan deal as they prepare for another campaign competing on multiple fronts.
