The football world was left in absolute shock after Argentina’s shameful behavior during the World Cup final trophy presentation.
As Spain lifted the World Cup trophy following their 1-0 extra-time victory over Argentina, almost every Argentina player and staff member turned their backs on the podium in a gesture widely condemned as “classless” and “disgraceful”.

While the governing body has launched a full disciplinary investigation into the post-match violence — including Leandro Paredes grabbing Eric Garcia by the throat, throwing punches at Gavi, and Nahuel Molina punching Spain captain Rodri — FIFA has also taken note of the one Argentina player who showed class when his teammates showed none.

“Following an assessment of the relevant match reports for the FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, and in line with article 36 of the FIFA disciplinary code, the FIFA disciplinary committee has appointed a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor to investigate potential breaches with regard to the post-match incidents. FIFA acknowledges the sporting gesture displayed by José Manuel López during the trophy presentation ceremony, which stands in contrast to the conduct of his teammates. The governing body commends acts of sportsmanship and respect, even in defeat.”
The Shocking Footage That Shamed Argentina
The footage that has shocked the world shows exactly what Argentina did after the final whistle:
· Nahuel Molina punched Spain captain Rodri in the stomach as he ran past celebrating
· Leandro Paredes grabbed Eric Garcia by the throat, threw punches, and shoved Gavi to the floor
· Thiago Almada forced Gavi to the ground
· Assistant coach Roberto Ayala held Garcia around the throat and struck Spain midfielder Dani Olmo
· Multiple players turned their backs on Spain’s trophy lift, mocking the ceremony and refusing to applaud the winners

But while almost every Argentina player and staff member turned their backs on the podium, Jose Manuel Lopez did, in fact, face Spain’s celebrations.
The Palmeiras forward did not feature in the final but did have an impact on the tournament, setting up Julian Alvarez’s winner in the quarter-final against Switzerland.
Even as an unused substitute on the day, the 25-year-old stood alone among the defeated squad in demonstrating respect toward the champions.
José Manuel López, often referred to as “Flaco López”, is arguably the lowest-profile player on the Argentina roster. Currently playing for Brazilian club Palmeiras, he joined in 2022 after arriving from Argentine club Lanús and finished as their top scorer last season. He featured during the tournament in the match against Switzerland and played a key part in creating the wonderful goal scored by his teammate Julián Álvarez.
On closer inspection, there was one player who went against the grain and faced the opposite direction from his teammates as Rodri lifted the World Cup trophy high into the New Jersey sky.

Scaloni’s Controversial Defense
Despite being heavily criticised, head coach Lionel Scaloni defended his players, maintaining that they had set a “great example” while showing people “how to lose”.
He told TYC:
“We are great in victory and we must be great in defeat. We accept that we lost, we gave everything, we arrived at a very crucial moment, but if they leave everything on the field like they did today, it’s a great example for our people and country. You lose and you have to get back up again.”
But fans and pundits alike have rejected Scaloni’s defense, pointing to the disgraceful behavior of his players as evidence that Argentina does not know how to lose.
