JUSTIN:Leeds United best player in Championship…

Jon Newsome praised Leeds United for a “super” play in the first half of their Championship match against Bristol City.

The move in question happened 18 minutes into Friday’s (2 February) match at Ashton Gate as Patrick Bamford was played through on goal.Bamford could not get the better of City goalkeeper Max O’Leary, but former Leeds defender Newsome was impressed all the same.

“It’s a super move again,” Newsome said on BBC Radio Leeds [2 February, 20:22]. “They miss the press out and go long.

“Then a lovely slide-rule ball into Patrick and he fires it early. Really, really good and it’ll give Leeds confidence.”

Bamford spurns chance at Ashton Gate

Leeds striker Bamford has been in great form in 2024, scoring four goals in five starts heading into this contest.

Georginio Rutter did very well to slot in Bamford and the in-form striker should have been picking a spot either side of O’Leary, rather than firing right at him.

As Newsome says, though, it was very nicely worked from Leeds to create the opening – one of a few that fell their way in a goalless opening 45 minutes
