5 Celtic left back transfer options as Brendan Rodgers to enter summer market for missed target.

The Hoops wanted a left-back in the winter window but couldn’t make it happen…

Brendan Rodgers toed the party line on February 2 when asked by the press and fan media about Celtic’s lack of activity in the winter transfer window.

Nicolas Kuhn and Adam Idah both arrived at Parkhead but it was a left-back they so desperately craved with Greg Taylor injured as Alexandro Bernabei – certainly before recent fixtures – was not considered by many to be good enough. The manager admitted the club “could have been braver” but that did not prevent the criticism from punters who felt their side lacked ambition and were perhaps unwilling to spend money.

The Hoops will have to make do with their squad until the end of the season but there will be business to be done in the summer once again and left-back will crop up again when it comes to adding at least one new body.

Football Scotland has taken a look at five potential options for Celts to consider when they do target that position.

Gijs Smal

The Dutchman is available on a free transfer in the summer with his FC Twente deal expiring. That would represent a very decent value signing should they be able to convince him to move to Glasgow.

At 26 he’d be ready for the hear and now while also providing a sell-on value down the line should he hit the ground running. Rangers were said to be keen last month but didn’t move.

Owen Beck

They tried in January to sign the Dundee loanee but Liverpool wouldn’t play ball. That won’t stop them returning to Anfield with their credit card out as they could move to swoop for a permanent transfer. Beck has proved he can cut it domestically in Scotland with the Dens outfit and the Hoops are admirers.

Quentin Merlin

The Nantes defender is another player linked with the league leaders last summer but his price tag was believed to be too heavy for them to put together a proposal. Still, he’s an option whose name continues to come up and if they’re looking to get fans back onside they may be more likely to splash some cash to bring in the 21-year-old who can only boost his own value in future.

Gaston Benedetti

The Argentine, 22, currently stars for Estudiantes in his native country and Celts have previous. That’s not to say Bernabei has been a roaring success but Benedetti would not cost the £3.5million he did with his contract expiring in the summer. He’d be a freebie which suits Celtic at his age, and he currently plays with Argentina 23s, so is certainly capable.

Harrison Burrows

Football Scotland exclusively told you Celtic approached Burrows’ side to learn his conditions in early January but did not move after that. He’s out of a deal with Peterborough in the summer, though, and there’s been admiration as recent as last month. That leaves the left-back prevalent on their shortlist and in the memory, so that could be revisited.
