The Detroit Lions are scouring the depths for some defensive support ahead of the NFL draft and free agency that takes place next month. They officially announced Mathieu Betts’ agreement on Tuesday. Betts is the current CFL Most Outstanding Defensive Player.

The Lions signed Mathieu Betts (90), the reigning CFL Most Outstanding Defensive Player, on Tuesday.

The 28-year-old Betts is a native of Montreal and was a student at Laval University in Quebec City. In 2019, he spent a brief time as an undrafted rookie with the Chicago Bears before being picked by the Edmonton Oilers with the third overall choice in the league draft.
On Tuesday, the CFL’s most outstanding defensive player, Mathieu Betts (90), was signed by the Lions.

Prior to signing a free agency contract with the BC Lions, Betts spent three seasons as a player in Edmonton. In 2023, the 6-foot-3, 250-pound athlete had a breakthrough as he led the CFL with 18.0 sacks—six more than any other player. He also finished with 44 tackles and four forced fumbles.

Alongside Aidan Hutchinson, he will join a Lions team that is hungry for pass-rush productivity. At the commencement of the new league year in March, veteran players Charles Harris and Romeo Okwara will become free agents, thus Betts will have competition for edge snaps from Josh Paschal, John Cominsky, James Houston, and any other offseason signings.
