Petit-Frere reiterated in an interview with ESPN that the betting he did was not connected to the NFL and that it was allowed under Tennessee state law. He claimed that the only reason it was approved was because it happened inside the team’s facilities.
Petit-Frere, who started 16 games at right tackle for the Titans in the previous season, continued, “I want to apologize to my family, coaches, teammates, and the Titans fans.” “I have always made an effort to abide by the rules at every turn in my life. I did not intentionally disobey the rules. The details of betting from a team facility were unknown to me, even after attending a league presentation.
The league is taking action against player betting, and Thursday’s suspensions are the most recent. The league penalized five players in April for breaking its gambling policy: Quintez Cephus, a wide receiver for the Detroit Lions, C.J. Moore, a safety, and Shaka Toney, a defensive end for the Washington Commanders. The suspensions were all indefinite.
The league suspended Stanley Berryhill and Jameson Williams, two wide receivers for the Lions who were selected in the first round of the 2022 draft, for six games for placing bets on non-NFL sports from a team facility. The Lions later released Berryhill, Moore, and Cephus.
The NFL suspended wide receiver Calvin Ridley of the Falcons for the entire season last year for placing bets on league games. The previous season, Ridley—a star player at the University of Alabama—was dealt to the Jacksonville Jaguars.
After that, Ridley joined former Colts quarterback Art Schlichter, Pro Football Hall of Famers Paul Hornung and Alex Karras, and former quarterback Paul Hornung as the fifth player in league history to miss a whole season due to gambling.
The league has strengthened its rules against player gambling as a result of the most recent sanctions. According to ESPN, all rookies will now have to go to mandatory instruction sessions on the subject, and league representatives will physically visit team facilities to highlight and elucidate which behaviors are forbidden under the rules.
According to the NFL’s gambling policy, players and league employees are not allowed to gamble in any way at any club, league facility, or event, including the practice facility.
