Leeds United could allow Willy Gnonto to leave this summer as Bundesliga side SC Freiburg step up their pursuit of the winger, although negotiations are proving complicated.
Gnonto has found it difficult to secure a consistent starting role under Daniel Farke this season, with the Leeds boss often opting for alternative attacking options.
Once regarded as one of Europe’s brightest young talents, the Italian forward was eager to leave Leeds United following their relegation from the Premier League in 2023. Everton attempted to sign him at the time, but Leeds refused to sanction a move and later reintegrated him into the squad.
However, Gnonto has struggled to fully develop as expected over the past three years, and Leeds are now open to his departure if the right offer arrives.
Freiburg, who previously tracked the attacker during his spell at FC Zürich, are pushing to bring him to Germany and have already entered talks with Leeds over a possible transfer.
According to German journalist Florian Plettenberg, negotiations remain challenging despite Freiburg’s strong interest. Discussions between all parties are ongoing, with Leeds reportedly willing to consider either a permanent sale or a loan deal that includes an obligation to buy.
The exact valuation Leeds have placed on Gnonto remains unclear.
Freiburg’s seventh-place finish in the Bundesliga could make the move an attractive opportunity for the winger, especially as he looks to revive his career and strengthen his chances of remaining involved with the Italian national team.
Gnonto himself admitted in April that he had hoped for more playing time this season.
He was introduced from the bench during Leeds’ clash against Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday, replacing Dan James shortly after the hour mark.
Leeds are also expected to strengthen their squad again this summer after a promising first season back in the Premier League. Former winger Aaron Lennon believes the club will spend heavily, and further arrivals could push Gnonto even further down the attacking hierarchy.
With his future and international ambitions in mind, a summer exit may ultimately benefit both the player and the club.
