Leeds United and Borussia Dortmund are emerging as the leading contenders in the race to sign departing Union Berlin centre-back Danilho Doekhi, with sources revealing which club currently holds the strongest position in the chase for the in-demand Dutch defender.
The 27-year-old has been a vital figure for Union Berlin, playing every single minute of Bundesliga football across the last two seasons while also contributing regularly in attack, scoring seven goals during that spell.
With his contract set to expire at the end of June, Doekhi is preparing to enter the free-agent market and interest in his signature is rapidly growing.
Daniel Farke has admired the defender for years, dating back to his time at Norwich City, and the Leeds boss views him as an ideal fit for his squad thanks to his height, composure, versatility, and experience in both back-three and back-four systems.
Leeds’ interest first surfaced in January and sources maintain that the admiration has not faded. During the winter transfer window, however, Doekhi chose to remain in Berlin until the end of the season, believing he would attract stronger offers once available on a free transfer.
Now, fresh talks have reportedly taken place between Leeds and the player’s camp over a possible summer switch.
Despite their long-standing interest, Leeds are yet to secure any firm commitment from Doekhi and may need to stay patient, with several Champions League and European clubs also pushing hard to win the race for his signature.
Borussia Dortmund are among the clubs showing serious interest, seeing the Dutchman as an affordable yet experienced addition to their defensive options. Multiple discussions have already taken place, and the opportunity to play regular European football makes Dortmund an attractive destination.
Ironically, the two rival clubs are linked through their “twin-city” connection, but they are far from the only sides monitoring the situation as competition intensifies ahead of the summer transfer window.
There is also strong interest from several Saudi Pro League clubs, who are attracted by Doekhi’s profile and free-agent status. However, sources insist the defender’s current preference is to remain in Europe.
Besiktas have also made enquiries regarding his demands and added him to their shortlist for defensive reinforcements. The Turkish side could become serious contenders due to their willingness to offer lucrative wages.
Aston Villa, Crystal Palace, PSV Eindhoven, along with several Bundesliga and Serie A clubs, have also been linked with the defender, although some of that interest has cooled or remains speculative for now. Sources add that the situation remains fluid and could shift quickly in the coming weeks.
Doekhi’s consistency, aerial dominance, and threat from set-pieces make him one of the standout bargain opportunities on the market this summer.
Leeds have been working behind the scenes on a potential deal for some time and remain firmly in the race, but stiff competition from Borussia Dortmund and other European clubs could make negotiations increasingly difficult.
A final decision from the defender is expected within the coming weeks.
