Features — £12m Leeds star’s Elland Road exit now looks increasingly likely after latest transfer developments
Leeds United boss Daniel Farke has achieved what was expected of him this season, guiding the club to Premier League safety and finishing a respectable 14th place. Despite early criticism, the German coach has steadied the side and delivered a solid campaign on their return to the top flight.
Attention has now shifted to a crucial summer transfer window, where Leeds are expected to back Farke with strong financial support as he looks to elevate the squad further. At the same time, major squad decisions are looming, with several current players’ futures under review.
One area clearly identified for improvement is midfield. Leeds are keen to add reinforcements in that department, but any new arrivals could depend on player sales to balance the squad.
Sean Longstaff’s situation at Leeds
Sean Longstaff arrived from Newcastle United last summer with expectations of becoming a key figure in midfield. He initially featured regularly and was seen as an important part of the starting setup.
However, a winter injury disrupted his momentum, and upon returning in January, he struggled to regain a consistent starting role. In the closing stages of the season, he was largely used as a squad option from the bench.
Players such as Ethan Ampadu, Anton Stach, Brenden Aaronson, and Ao Tanaka were all preferred ahead of him in the midfield hierarchy.
With Leeds reportedly monitoring Tanner Tessmann, currently at Olympique Lyonnais, it appears likely that midfield changes are on the way this summer.
Exit increasingly probable
Given the competition for places and the likelihood of new midfield arrivals, Longstaff could be one of the players to make way. All indications suggest he may have already played his final game for Leeds.
The midfielder originally left Newcastle in search of more consistent playing time and a larger role in a progressing project. However, his involvement has reduced significantly in the second half of the season, with most of his appearances coming from the bench or in cup competitions.
That situation is far from what he envisioned when he made the move to Elland Road. With Leeds preparing to strengthen further in midfield, his chances of regular minutes look even slimmer next season.
At this stage, all signs point toward one outcome — Sean Longstaff is expected to move on from Leeds in the upcoming transfer window.
