Leeds United Step Up Goalkeeper Hunt as Manchester United Move Puts Derby County on Alert

Derby County could be forced into a battle to keep Jacob Widell Zetterstrom this summer after fresh developments in the transfer market involving Leeds United.

The Whites are expected to accelerate their search for a new goalkeeper after Karl Darlow moved closer to joining Manchester United.

Only a few days after Illan Meslier agreed a switch to Arsenal, Darlow now appears set to complete a move to Old Trafford following the expiry of his Leeds contract.

With that transfer reportedly entering its final stages, Derby have been placed on alert as Leeds prepare to intensify their pursuit of a replacement. Swedish international Jacob Widell Zetterstrom remains one of the names under consideration.

Leeds had also been pushing to sign Japan goalkeeper Kion Suzuki, but reports from Italy claim the 23-year-old has rejected the opportunity to move to Elland Road.

Interest in Zetterstrom is nothing new. Last month, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano revealed that Leeds, Wolves and Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt had all made enquiries about the Derby goalkeeper and requested information on his valuation.

The 26-year-old still has one year remaining on his Derby contract, although the club are believed to hold an option to extend the deal by a further 12 months.

Zetterstrom’s reputation has grown rapidly since arriving from Djurgarden for around £1.4 million. His impressive displays have helped him establish himself as Sweden’s first-choice goalkeeper, including standout performances during the World Cup against Japan and France.

An offer worth more than £10 million could prove difficult for Derby to reject, representing a remarkable profit on the fee they originally paid for the Swedish shot-stopper.

Leeds are in urgent need of reinforcements between the posts, with only Lucas Perri and Alex Cairns currently available in the first-team squad.

Perri had previously been the club’s first-choice goalkeeper but, like Meslier before him, lost his place to Darlow following costly mistakes against Newcastle United, Manchester United and Aston Villa. Daniel Farke now heads into the summer transfer window needing to strengthen his goalkeeping options.

Derbyshire Live’s Leigh Curtis believes the speculation linking Zetterstrom with Leeds is unlikely to disappear unless the Yorkshire club signs another goalkeeper.

He also praised Derby’s recruitment team, pointing out that a £1.4 million signing could now generate an eight-figure transfer fee. According to Curtis, if such an offer arrives, it would be extremely difficult for Derby to turn it down given the financial benefits and the opportunity to reinvest in strengthening other areas of the squad.

For now, the transfer rumours are expected to continue, and Zetterstrom’s future remains one to watch closely as Leeds search for a new No. 1.
