A loan move to Leicester City last season provided the perfect opportunity to rediscover his best form. Despite the Foxes enduring another disappointing campaign amid financial uncertainty, James quickly became one of the team’s brightest performers.
After opening his account against Wrexham in September, he went on to score 11 goals and register four assists in just 34 appearances. His outstanding displays earned him the Championship Young Player of the Season award in April.
Those performances have naturally attracted widespread interest. Clubs including Atalanta and Villarreal have been linked with the midfielder, while reports now suggest Fulham are preparing an offer as they look to finally win the race for his signature.
The London club, now managed by Alvaro Arbeloa following Marco Silva’s move to Benfica, see James as a player capable of adding quality and energy to their midfield ahead of the new Premier League season.
Wolves and West Ham won’t be surprised
Although Wolverhampton Wanderers and West Ham United appear set to miss out on James, neither club—and certainly not Birmingham City or Wales manager Craig Bellamy—is likely to be shocked by the latest transfer developments.
James has consistently demonstrated his quality regardless of the circumstances around him. He excelled during Birmingham’s relegation campaign, starred again while Leicester struggled, and has continued to enhance his reputation with Wales. Those who have watched his rise closely know he possesses the talent and mentality to attract interest from top-flight clubs.
Both Wolves and West Ham are focused on securing an immediate return to the Premier League following relegation, and James would have been an ideal addition to either midfield. However, with Fulham now leading the race for his signature, the Championship clubs and Bellamy will simply see it as the natural next step in the midfielder’s career rather than a surprise.
While missing out represents a frustrating transfer blow for Wolves and West Ham, both clubs still possess quality options in midfield. Wolves, for example, recently secured Brazilian international André on a new contract before the arrival of head coach Cesar Peixoto.
