Mainz 05 attacking midfielder Paul Nebel has handed in a transfer request, sparking intense interest from Coventry City and two other Premier League clubs this summer.
The 23-year-old, valued between €22–25 million, has informed Mainz that he does not wish to extend his contract beyond 2027 and wants a new challenge. German reports indicate Coventry are currently leading the chase for the versatile attacker.
Nebel said:
“I feel ready for the next step in my career. I want to play regular football at a high level and develop further in a competitive environment.”
Frank Lampard’s Coventry City view Nebel as an exciting addition who could bring creativity, goal threat and energy to their midfield as they prepare for Premier League life. The Sky Blues are preparing concrete steps according to sources in Germany.
However, Westham and Newcastle have also entered the race, while Bundesliga clubs Stuttgart and RB Leipzig continue to monitor the situation. Mainz are open to a sale if a suitable offer arrives and the player has a preferred destination.
Paul Nebel added:
“I has made my position clear. If the right club comes in with a fair offer, I’m open to leaving this summer.”
Nebel’s technical quality, two-footed ability and high work rate make him an attractive target. Whether Coventry can win the battle against Premier League competition remains to be seen, but his willingness to push for a move has significantly increased the urgency.
Further updates are expected as negotiations develop.
