“This Is Not a Team That Can Win the Title” – Jim Goodwin Writes Off Rangers’ Premiership Chances Despite Dundee United Draw
Dundee United manager Jim Goodwin has cast doubt over Rangers’ ability to challenge for the Scottish Premiership title this season following his side’s 1-1 draw with Derek McInnes’ men at Tannadice.
Although Rangers fought back in the second half to rescue a point after falling behind before the break, Goodwin suggested he was far from convinced by what he saw from the visitors.
“This is not a team that can win the title,” Goodwin reportedly said when reflecting on Rangers’ performance.
“We were just unlucky. We could have won the game.”
The Dundee United boss admitted Rangers improved after the interval, particularly following tactical changes from Derek McInnes, but insisted his own side had the clearer opportunities and should have taken all three points.
“For large parts of the game, I thought we controlled things well,” he said. “We defended with discipline, created good chances and probably deserved more than a point. If we’d been a little more clinical, we’d be celebrating a win.”
Goodwin praised his players for matching Rangers physically and tactically, arguing that his team showed no fear against one of Scotland’s biggest clubs.
“We respected Rangers because of their history, but once the game started, I felt we competed with them in every department. We didn’t look second best.”
Rangers found an equaliser through Thelo Aasgaard after a much-improved second-half display, but they were unable to complete the turnaround despite enjoying more possession in the closing stages.
Goodwin acknowledged Rangers’ response after the interval but maintained that his players were unfortunate not to come away with maximum points.
“They had more of the ball after the break, but football is about creating and taking chances. We had enough opportunities to win the game.”
The comments are likely to spark debate among supporters, especially with the Premiership season only just beginning. Rangers fans will argue that one match is far too early to judge a team’s title prospects, while others may see Goodwin’s remarks as an attempt to pile pressure on McInnes and his squad.
Despite the criticism, Rangers will take encouragement from their second-half performance and the influence of several summer signings as they continue adapting to McInnes’ style.
With the campaign still in its infancy, Goodwin’s assessment is certain to become a talking point, particularly if Rangers mount a sustained challenge in the months ahead.
