West Ham and Wolves Join Race for Real Betis Midfielder Nelson Deossa
West Ham United and Wolverhampton Wanderers are stepping up their search for midfield reinforcements, with both Championship clubs reportedly targeting Real Betis star Nelson Deossa ahead of the new season.
The Colombian midfielder, 26, only arrived at Betis last summer after spells with Estudiantes, Pachuca, and Monterrey, having previously built his career in Colombia, Argentina, and Mexico.
Although Deossa featured 33 times in all competitions during his debut campaign in Spain, he struggled for consistent league minutes under Manuel Pellegrini, making fewer than 800 minutes of La Liga appearances. Despite that, Pellegrini has praised the midfielder’s physical qualities, describing him as a player with “a lot of power.”
According to Spanish publication MundoBetis, representatives from both West Ham and Wolves were present at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin to watch Real Betis face Arsenal in a pre-season friendly. The two clubs are believed to be closely monitoring Deossa as they consider a potential move before the transfer window closes.
The report also claims scouts from Leeds United and Ipswich Town attended the match, highlighting the growing interest in the versatile Colombian.
Deossa has been used in a more advanced attacking role during Betis’ pre-season preparations, scoring twice while showcasing his versatility. His performances have attracted attention from several English clubs, with West Ham and Wolves among the most serious admirers.
Brazilian side Vasco da Gama had been in talks over a possible transfer, but Betis have reportedly paused negotiations as they wait to see whether stronger offers arrive from England.
At this stage, neither West Ham nor Wolves has submitted an official bid. However, another impressive display could encourage either club to make their move.
Why Both Clubs Are Interested
Despite having limited experience in European football, Deossa’s athleticism, versatility, and ability to play in multiple midfield roles have made him an attractive option.
West Ham are expected to strengthen their midfield after major departures, including the £85 million sale of Mateus Fernandes to Tottenham Hotspur and Freddie Potts’ £10 million move to Club Brugge. Edson Alvarez is also widely expected to leave before the transfer deadline, increasing the club’s need for reinforcements.
Wolves also have work to do after selling Joao Gomes to Aston Villa for around £38 million. While Marshall Munetsi and Tommy Doyle have returned to provide additional options, head coach Cesar Peixoto is still eager to add more quality and depth in midfield.
A Versatile Addition
Primarily an attacking midfielder, Deossa is capable of operating across the middle of the pitch and has even been deployed as a striker during pre-season. That flexibility could make him an appealing option for both clubs as they prepare for the demands of the Championship campaign.

With the Championship season fast approaching, both West Ham and Wolves are under pressure to strengthen their squads quickly.
Wolves have already secured the signings of Kieran Trippier, Raul Jimenez, and Rafiki Said, while West Ham are still searching for their first major arrival of the summer.
Deossa could emerge as a key target for either side, but with Leeds United and Ipswich Town also monitoring the situation, competition for his signature is expected to be fierce.
The coming days could prove decisive as English clubs weigh up formal offers for the Real Betis midfielder.
