Roberto De Zerbi has to acknowledge what he is about to put Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes through

Roberto De Zerbi faces an important challenge as he prepares to put Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes through a demanding tactical test.

Both midfielders possess plenty of technical quality, but De Zerbi’s style requires much more than simply being comfortable on the ball. His system demands quick decision-making, positional intelligence, aggressive pressing and the ability to adapt when possession changes hands.

For Tonali, the challenge could be particularly significant. The Italian midfielder is known for his passing range, work rate and ability to control the tempo, but De Zerbi will expect him to take greater responsibility in building attacks and helping the team progress through pressure.

Fernandes, meanwhile, will need to prove that he can handle the intensity and tactical demands of a system that places heavy responsibility on midfielders. His ability to find space, move the ball quickly and contribute defensively could determine how quickly he becomes an important part of the team.

De Zerbi must therefore recognise the pressure he is placing on both players. If he gets the balance right, however, Tonali and Fernandes could form a hugely influential midfield partnership.

The experiment could be demanding — but potentially transformative.
