Rangers chiefs have been challenged by an angry supporter over Derek McInnes’ absence from the club’s latest shareholder meeting, with the manager’s decision to stay away becoming a talking point amid mounting frustration over the team’s difficult start to the season.
McInnes was not present as chairman Andrew Cavenagh and other club officials faced questions from shareholders. One frustrated fan questioned why the Rangers boss was missing from the meeting, particularly with supporters demanding answers following a run of disappointing results.
Cavenagh moved to explain that McInnes was concentrating on preparing the squad for upcoming fixtures and was not deliberately avoiding scrutiny after Rangers’ poor results.
The pressure has increased following Rangers’ 2-1 home defeat to Hibernian, leaving McInnes still searching for his first competitive victory after three matches. Rangers have also suffered defeat in Europe against Jagiellonia Białystok and drawn with Dundee United.
But the biggest anger from the meeting centred on recruitment.
One supporter described the summer business as “awful”, questioning whether some of the new arrivals were actually an improvement on players who had left Ibrox. The criticism reflects growing concern among sections of the Rangers support that the squad has not been strengthened quickly enough to challenge Celtic.
Rangers have already brought in nine players this summer, but Cavenagh revealed that the club is still targeting another three to five additions before the transfer window closes. He defended the recruitment strategy and stressed that responsibility for the squad’s performances cannot rest on one individual.
The timing of the criticism will add further pressure on McInnes and the Rangers hierarchy, with the club facing crucial fixtures in both Europe and domestic competition.
For now, the Rangers board is insisting that the rebuilding process remains on course. But with supporters demanding immediate improvement, the next few weeks could prove decisive for McInnes and the club’s ambitious summer project.
