West Ham Should Target Zian Flemming in Controversial Burnley Raid
West Ham United should consider making a move for Burnley forward Zian Flemming this summer as Nuno Espirito Santo continues his search for additional firepower.
The Hammers have retained much of their squad following their relegation to the Championship, but Nuno will be determined to strengthen his options before the new campaign gets fully underway.
West Ham have already generated more than £150 million from player sales this summer, with Mateus Fernandes, Crysencio Summerville and Freddie Potts departing for substantial fees. That gives recruitment chief Nils Koppen room to invest, with attacking reinforcements seemingly high on the club’s agenda.
Troy Parrott remains heavily linked with a move to the London Stadium, while veteran striker Jamie Vardy has also emerged as a possible option. However, Flemming could provide West Ham with a different and potentially more effective solution.
The 28-year-old enjoyed a productive campaign with Burnley last season, reaching double figures in the Premier League despite the Clarets’ relegation. He has also already made an impact this season, scoring Burnley’s equaliser against Notts County in the League Cup before converting their opening penalty in the shootout.
Flemming Would Add Experience and Versatility
Flemming joined Burnley after initially arriving in England with Millwall in 2022. During his time at The Den, the Dutchman established himself as a popular figure, scoring 23 goals and providing eight assists in 92 appearances across all competitions.
He moved to Burnley on loan in 2024 with an obligation to buy for around £7 million, which was activated following Burnley’s return to the Premier League.
Since then, Flemming has continued to develop his reputation, attracting interest from clubs including Brentford and Leeds United.
West Ham could now look to beat those sides to his signature.
Flemming’s Premier League campaign demonstrated that he can operate effectively as a forward while contributing to the team’s pressing game. He outperformed his expected-goals figures, won fouls for his side and showed an ability to lead the press from the front.
Those qualities could make him an attractive option for Nuno, particularly with Taty Castellanos, Pablo Felipe and Niclas Füllkrug currently providing his main attacking options.
At 28, Flemming should also be approaching the prime years of his career. His experience in both the Championship and Premier League makes him a potentially valuable signing for a West Ham side aiming for an immediate return to the top flight.
A Deal That Would Upset Millwall
Any potential move would carry an extra layer of rivalry because of Flemming’s history with Millwall.
The Dutchman became a fan favourite during his spell at The Den, making a switch to bitter rivals West Ham particularly controversial.
However, completing the deal could be difficult.
Flemming is under contract with Burnley until 2029, putting the Clarets in a strong negotiating position. Burnley have already seen several important players leave this summer and are unlikely to willingly strengthen a direct promotion rival.
Nevertheless, West Ham have the financial resources to test Burnley’s resolve.
For Nuno, Flemming could represent the ideal combination of Championship experience, Premier League pedigree, physicality and attacking productivity.
For Burnley, losing him would be a major blow.
And for Millwall supporters, seeing one of their former favourites cross the divide to join West Ham would make the transfer even harder to accept.
If West Ham are serious about strengthening their attack ahead of their Championship promotion push, a move for Flemming could be one of the most intriguing—and controversial—deals of the summer.
