Kevin Phillips Makes Worrying Dayann Methalie Transfer Admission as Régis Le Bris Urged to Act

Kevin Phillips has voiced serious concerns over Sunderland’s pursuit of Toulouse defender Dayann Methalie, despite admitting he would “love” to see the Frenchman in red and white.

The Sunderland legend believes the Black Cats must move decisively if they are serious about landing the highly-rated left-back — and has urged head coach Régis Le Bris to act before the deal slips away.

Methalie, 20, has emerged as one of Sunderland’s top defensive targets this summer. The France Under-21 international has impressed with his athleticism, progressive carrying and defensive solidity, prompting strong interest from the Stadium of Light. Toulouse are understood to value the player at around €40 million, a figure that reflects both his potential and the growing competition for his signature.

While many Sunderland supporters are excited by the prospect of landing such a talented young defender, Phillips has warned that the club cannot afford to drag their feet.

“He’s a top player, there’s no doubt about that I’d love to get Methalie at Sunderland,” Phillips said.

“But this is the type of deal that can disappear very quickly if you hesitate. Toulouse know what they’ve got. Other clubs are watching. If we really want him, we have to show that seriousness now.”

Phillips believes the timing is critical. With the transfer window moving into its decisive phase, he feels Sunderland must decide whether Methalie is a genuine priority or risk missing out entirely.

“The big thing for me is whether we’re prepared to go the distance on a player like this,” he continued.

“We’ve strengthened in some areas, but left-back is still a position that needs looking at if we want to compete properly this season, especially with European football coming. Methalie would give us that quality and that energy going forward.”

The former striker also raised concerns about the potential consequences of missing out on a target of this calibre.

“When you identify a player this good and then don’t follow through, it can leave you short,” Phillips added. “Other clubs won’t wait. If someone else comes in with a strong offer, Toulouse will listen. That’s the reality of the market.”

Sunderland have already made progress in the window, with Thomas Meunier among the arrivals, but Phillips believes the addition of a young, high-upside defender like Methalie would represent a significant statement of intent under Régis Le Bris.

“Le Bris knows what he wants from his full-backs,” Phillips said. “Methalie fits the profile — aggressive, technical, and comfortable in possession. But wanting him and getting him are two different things. The club have to be ready to act.”

As negotiations continue, the coming days could prove decisive. For Phillips, the message is clear: if Sunderland are serious about Dayann Methalie, they cannot afford to wait any longer.
