Aston Villa have reportedly held exploratory talks over a possible summer transfer for West Ham United defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
The 28-year-old is emerging as a realistic option for Premier League clubs following West Ham’s relegation to the Championship, with the former Manchester United full-back already attracting interest from several top-flight sides this summer.
According to The Athletic, Villa have shown strong interest in Wan-Bissaka as they look to provide competition for Matty Cash at right-back. Arsenal were also linked with the DR Congo international earlier in the transfer window, with TEAMtalk reporting that he had been considered as a potential addition to Mikel Arteta’s squad.
Wan-Bissaka’s defensive ability and Premier League experience make him an attractive option for clubs looking to strengthen their squad without necessarily signing a guaranteed starter.
West Ham facing another key departure?
West Ham have already seen important players such as Mateus Fernandes and Crysencio Summerville leave this summer, with relegation making it difficult for the club to retain their entire squad.
The Hammers have, however, managed to keep hold of captain Jarrod Bowen so far, although further departures could still happen before the transfer window closes.
The Athletic report that Wan-Bissaka could be available for around £25 million. That valuation could prove decisive, with Villa needing to determine whether they are willing to meet West Ham’s asking price.
If Villa decide against making a move, there could still be other Premier League clubs ready to take advantage of the situation.
The previous Arsenal interest appears to have cooled, but Arteta could still see value in Wan-Bissaka as an experienced option capable of adding depth and defensive competition to his squad.
West Ham will undoubtedly want to keep as much of their squad together as possible as they prepare for life in the Championship. However, should Wan-Bissaka depart, the Hammers would still be expected to enter the new season among the leading contenders for an immediate return to the Premier League.
