Brentford’s £40m Diouf Move Could Trigger Major Left-Back Shake-Up
Brentford have stepped up their pursuit of West Ham United left-back El Hadji Malick Diouf by submitting an improved offer worth up to £40 million, according to The Athletic.
West Ham previously rejected an approach for the 21-year-old and made it clear that they did not intend to sell him this summer. However, the significantly increased offer could now test the Hammers’ resolve.
The move comes as Brentford head coach Keith Andrews looks to strengthen his squad. Sky Sports has reported that the Bees are targeting both a left-winger and a left-back, making Diouf an increasingly prominent option.
Diouf enjoyed an impressive first Premier League campaign following his £22m transfer from Slavia Prague. Despite West Ham’s relegation, the Senegalese defender registered five league assists and regularly provided attacking energy from the left flank.
His potential arrival, however, would raise questions over Brentford’s current options at left-back.
Rico Henry suffered a hamstring injury in March after making 25 league appearances and subsequently missed the final nine games of the season. Meanwhile, Aaron Hickey returned from a lengthy injury absence and made 21 appearances, including 15 starts at left-back.
Hickey is naturally right-footed and may not be viewed as Brentford’s long-term solution on the left, particularly with Michael Kayode currently the club’s only natural right-back.
Kristoffer Ajer and Keane Lewis-Potter also featured at full-back last season, highlighting the need for further defensive reinforcement.
Lewis-Potter’s situation is particularly interesting. The former Hull City forward was converted into a left-back by Thomas Frank in November 2024 and subsequently played 22 consecutive matches in the position, starting 18 of them.
However, Lewis-Potter is believed to prefer playing further forward, while Andrews has acknowledged that he inherited the player as a full-back.
His attacking numbers have also been relatively modest, with no more than three Premier League goals in any of his four seasons at Brentford, including a campaign largely spent at left-back.
A move for Diouf could therefore allow Lewis-Potter to return to a more advanced role. However, the recent arrival of Jaidon Anthony has already increased competition in attack, while Brentford’s continued search for another left-winger could provide an important clue about Andrews’ plans.
With Brentford now willing to offer as much as £40m for Diouf, the transfer could have significant consequences for both the Bees’ defensive structure and Lewis-Potter’s future position.
