🚨 BREAKING: Transfer Race Explodes as Wolves Target Coventry City Star — West Brom and Stoke City Plot Stunning Hijack!

When a Championship club earns promotion to the Premier League, it is often inevitable that some players who played important roles in the promotion campaign will find themselves surplus to requirements.
The Premier League is an unforgiving environment, and with the financial rewards of staying in the top flight growing increasingly significant, clubs cannot afford to carry players they believe are not ready for the step up. Sentiment can quickly take a back seat to squad-building decisions.
Coventry City, last season’s Championship winners, have so far avoided losing any of the key players who helped them secure promotion. In fact, the Sky Blues have gone a step further by making some of last season’s loan players permanent additions.
However, with Coventry preparing to begin their Premier League campaign away to reigning champions Arsenal this Friday, Frank Lampard will eventually have to decide which members of his squad are capable of competing at the highest level and which players may need to leave before the September 1 transfer deadline.
Wolves Among Clubs Monitoring Ellis Simms
According to Darren Witcoop, Coventry could receive loan approaches from several Championship clubs for Ellis Simms this month, with recently relegated Wolves potentially among those interested.
Cesar Peixoto already has Raul Jimenez and Adam Armstrong available in attack, meaning Wolves may not desperately need another established striker. Nevertheless, Simms’ profile and recent Championship record could make the opportunity difficult to ignore.
The 25-year-old enjoyed an impressive campaign last season despite primarily operating as a squad player. He featured in 43 league matches but started only 15, accumulating just over 1,600 minutes.
Despite his limited starts, Simms scored 13 goals and finished with the second-best goals-per-90 figure in the Championship, behind only Ross Stewart.
Ellis Simms — 2025/26 Championship
– Appearances: 43 (15 starts)
– Goals: 13
– Goals per 90: 0.72
– Expected goals per 90: 0.64
– Shots on target per 90: 1.88
His 2025/26 campaign was particularly important after a disappointing 2024/25 season, when he scored only seven goals in all competitions despite underlying numbers suggesting he should have produced considerably more.
Last season went a long way towards answering those concerns, and there is still room for Simms to develop further.
A loan move could give him the opportunity to demonstrate that he belongs at Premier League level. For Wolves, meanwhile, helping him secure another promotion could potentially prove beneficial to both player and club.
But Wolves should not be the only Championship side looking to take advantage of Simms’ potential availability.
West Brom Could Benefit From Simms
West Bromwich Albion could be one of the most logical destinations for the Coventry striker.
There had been some uncertainty over whether James Morrison would abandon the 4-4-2 system that served him so well during his interim spell. Pre-season and the opening matches of the campaign, however, have provided a clear answer: West Brom intend to continue playing with two strikers.
That makes attacking depth particularly important across a demanding 46-game Championship season.
Jimmy-Jay Morgan has already looked like one of the standout signings of the summer, producing goals and assists during pre-season and the opening competitive fixtures.
He has been partnered with Aune Heggebo, who appeared to score his first goal of the season against Norwich City on the opening day. If Heggebo can build on his first campaign at The Hawthorns, West Brom could have a dangerous partnership at the top end of the pitch.
The concern comes when looking at the options behind them.
Barney Stewart looks like an intriguing addition and could potentially make an impact if given opportunities. Beyond him, however, West Brom’s striker options appear limited.
Tammer Bany is the only other recognised striker in the squad, but injury problems have restricted him to just over 100 minutes of league football over the past 18 months.
While reports suggest Bany is approaching full fitness, relying on him throughout an entire Championship campaign would carry an element of risk.
Simms would provide West Brom with a proven and relatively durable option. He has missed only two league matches through injury over the past three seasons and demonstrated last campaign that he can be extremely effective even when used primarily from the bench.
He could therefore provide Morrison with the ability to rotate Heggebo and Morgan without significantly weakening the attack.
Stoke City Should Also Be Interested
Stoke City may have an even stronger case for pursuing Simms.
The striker previously worked with current Potters boss Mark Robins at Coventry, scoring 19 goals during his first season under the manager. That existing relationship could be an important factor if Stoke make a move.
More importantly, Stoke’s current striker options look thin.
Sam Gallagher started their opening-day defeat to Swansea City and remains an experienced player who can contribute at Championship level. However, the 30-year-old is unlikely to be the answer if Stoke want to build an attack capable of sustaining a promotion challenge.
Gallagher was replaced by Robert Bozenik, who made fewer than 850 league minutes during his first campaign at the bet365 Stadium. Although he scored against Oldham Athletic in the EFL Cup, his overall record remains relatively unproven.
Stoke looked short of attacking ideas while chasing the game against Swansea, with Sorba Thomas providing one of their biggest threats.
That makes adding attacking quality a priority during the final weeks of the transfer window, and Simms should arguably be near the top of their shortlist.
A move to Stoke could also offer Simms something he may not receive elsewhere: regular starts under a manager who already knows how to get the best out of him.
If Thomas remains at the club, Simms would also have an excellent source of service from the wing, potentially making him even more dangerous in front of goal.
The biggest drawback is Stoke’s promotion prospects. On paper, they may not be as strong a contender as Wolves or West Brom, which could influence Simms’ decision.
However, if the striker’s priority is guaranteed playing time and the chance to rebuild his reputation as a regular starter, Stoke could present an extremely attractive opportunity.
Where Will Ellis Simms End Up?
With Coventry preparing for life in the Premier League, Ellis Simms’ future could become one of the more intriguing transfer situations to watch before the window closes.
Wolves could offer him another promotion push, West Brom could provide valuable attacking depth, while Stoke could give him the regular starting role he may be seeking.
For Simms, the decision could ultimately come down to whether he prioritises the strongest promotion opportunity or guaranteed minutes.
