Celtic Fans Question Benjamin Nygren’s Future After Costly Error in LASK Collapse

Benjamin Nygren’s Celtic future has come under serious scrutiny following the club’s stunning Champions League collapse against LASK.

Celtic travelled to Austria with a commanding 4-1 aggregate lead and looked well on course to reach the Champions League league phase after Callum McGregor’s early goal.

But everything changed when Nygren misplaced a pass in midfield. LASK quickly punished the mistake, with Moses Usor scoring to make it 1-1 on the night and give the home side belief.

From there, Celtic completely lost control.

LASK scored twice more to level the tie on aggregate before a late goal forced extra time. Samuel Adeniran then completed the remarkable comeback in the 109th minute as LASK secured a 5-1 victory on the night.

Nygren Under Pressure

Nygren’s mistake has attracted plenty of criticism because of how impressive he had been in the first leg.

The Swedish midfielder had looked confident and creative at Celtic Park, making his performance in Linz even more disappointing.

The Daily Record criticised his loose pass, while the Herald Scotland gave him just 4/10, the lowest rating among the Celtic players.

Some Celtic supporters have now questioned whether Nygren can recover from such a damaging European night.

One section of the fanbase believes he should be dropped, while others have gone further and suggested Celtic should consider his future at the club.

However, there are also supporters who believe it would be unfair to judge a young player solely on one disastrous performance.

The Bigger Problem

Nygren was not solely responsible for Celtic’s collapse.

The entire team struggled to deal with LASK’s pressure, while defensive mistakes and a loss of composure allowed the Austrian side to keep pushing until they completed one of the most remarkable comebacks Celtic have suffered in Europe.

That will be something Martin O’Neill must address.

The manager cannot afford to allow one defeat to damage the confidence of the entire squad.

O’Neill Faces a Big Decision

The Celtic boss now has to decide how he handles Nygren.

Dropping him could protect the midfielder from further pressure, but keeping faith with him would give the 23-year-old an opportunity to respond on the pitch.

O’Neill has already shown that he is willing to make difficult selection decisions, so Nygren’s next involvement will be closely watched.

The midfielder now has a chance to turn the narrative around.

What Happens Next?

With the transfer window still open, speculation about Nygren’s future is likely to continue.

But Celtic may be better served by allowing him to rebuild his confidence rather than making a rushed decision based on one terrible night.

Nygren has already demonstrated that he has the ability to produce impressive performances.

Now he needs to show that the LASK collapse was a painful lesson rather than the beginning of the end of his Celtic career.

One thing is certain: when Nygren gets his next opportunity, Celtic fans will be watching every touch.
