West Ham handed HUGE £0 transfer opportunity as ex-Arsenal star becomes free agent

Reiss Nelson is officially a free agent.
And while this does not mean the 26-year-old is on his way to the London Stadium, it certainly gives West Ham a major opportunity they cannot afford to overlook.
The Hammers had previously been in talks over a potential move for Nelson, but those negotiations were complicated by the fact that Arsenal still had a contract with the winger.
Now?
That problem has completely disappeared.
West Ham no longer need to negotiate a transfer fee with Arsenal. They can focus entirely on convincing Nelson that east London is the right place for the next chapter of his career.
For a club trying to assemble a squad capable of bouncing straight back to the Premier League, this could be one of those low-risk opportunities that supporters look back on later and wonder why it was ignored.
Arsenal contract decision changes everything for West Ham
Nelson’s Arsenal career has finally come to an end.
The winger came through the Gunners’ academy and spent an incredible 18 years with the club before leaving following the mutual termination of his contract.
He made 90 senior appearances for Arsenal, scoring eight goals and registering nine assists during his time with the first team.
However, despite showing plenty of promise throughout his career, Nelson never managed to nail down a regular starting position.
Instead, he became something of a familiar name on the fringes of the squad, with loan spells at Hoffenheim, Feyenoord, Fulham and Brentford interrupting his time in north London.
His latest spell with Brentford was also disrupted, with injuries limiting his involvement.
It became increasingly obvious that Nelson was unlikely to force his way into Mikel Arteta’s plans.
And Arsenal have now decided to cut ties.
According to David Ornstein, Nelson and Arsenal have mutually agreed to terminate his contract 12 months before it was due to expire, allowing him to become a free agent.
That is the part that should immediately grab West Ham’s attention.

The Hammers did not suddenly become interested in Nelson because he became a free agent.
They were already exploring a deal.
West Ham had been in discussions over the possibility of signing the former Arsenal youngster, meaning the club have already done some of the groundwork on a potential move.
Previously, Arsenal’s involvement meant West Ham would have had to negotiate a transfer fee.
That is no longer necessary.
Nelson can now walk away from Arsenal and choose his next club without a buying club having to pay a transfer fee.

Of course, West Ham would still have to agree personal terms with Nelson, and that is where things could become complicated.
But compared with the previous situation, the Hammers have been handed a significant advantage.
The club can now decide whether Nelson’s wages and overall package make sense without having to factor in a transfer fee.
And given the Hammers’ need for additional attacking depth, it is a conversation worth having.
Why West Ham fans should be excited
Let’s be realistic.
Nelson is not arriving with the reputation of a world-class winger.
His recent numbers certainly do not suggest that West Ham should throw everything at him.
But that is not what this potential deal should be about.
West Ham need depth.
They need players capable of coming off the bench, competing for starting places and giving Espirito Santo another option when games become difficult.
Nelson fits that description.
He has Premier League experience.
He has played European football.
He has experience of competing for a place at one of England’s biggest clubs.
And perhaps most importantly, he still has something to prove.
At 26, Nelson is entering a crucial period of his career.
He cannot afford another season sitting on the fringes.
West Ham could offer him exactly what he needs: a club where he can play an important role and attempt to rebuild his reputation.
For the Hammers, they could potentially get a hungry winger without paying a transfer fee.
That sounds like a gamble worth considering.
But there is one HUGE problem
There is, however, one reason West Ham supporters should not get carried away just yet.
Nelson has options.
Ornstein’s update indicates that the winger is attracting interest from clubs in England and overseas, meaning West Ham are not operating in an empty market.
Nelson is now free to assess every opportunity available to him.
And that could make things very difficult for the Hammers.
West Ham can offer him a major role in their promotion campaign, but another club could offer him Premier League football immediately.
That could be difficult to compete with.
Nelson will also have to decide whether dropping into the Championship is the right move at this stage of his career.
The Hammers can sell him the ambition of returning to the top flight, but they cannot guarantee promotion.
That is the gamble.
West Ham must not overpay
There is another warning for the Hammers.
Free transfer does not mean free player.
West Ham still need to protect their wage structure.
If Nelson demands a significant salary simply because Arsenal have released him, the club need to be prepared to walk away.
His recent injury problems and limited playing time mean there are questions surrounding how consistently he can perform.
That does not make him a bad signing.
It simply means West Ham need to get the deal right.
A sensible wage, manageable bonuses and a contract that protects the club would make much more sense than throwing huge money at a player who is still trying to rediscover his best form.
The Hammers should be knocking on his door
This is where the decision becomes pretty simple for West Ham.
They were interested before.
Nelson is now available without a transfer fee.
He can play on either wing.
He has Premier League experience.
He is still only 26.
And West Ham desperately need more attacking depth if they are serious about their promotion ambitions.
There are obviously risks involved, but there are also very few guarantees in football.
The Hammers should at least be pushing hard to discover what Nelson wants.
If his wage demands are reasonable and the player is genuinely interested in the project, this could turn into a very smart piece of business.
And imagine the reaction if Nelson rediscovers his Arsenal form and becomes an important player in West Ham’s promotion push.
Suddenly, the decision to move quickly would look inspired.
But if West Ham hesitate, another club could easily step in.
That is the frustrating part.
The player they wanted is now available for £0 — and they still might miss out.
West Ham have already shown interest.
Now it is time to decide whether that interest was serious enough to turn into action.
For Nelson, this is a fresh start after 18 years at Arsenal.
For West Ham, it could be an opportunity to add quality without paying a transfer fee.
