SFA Deadline Statement as European Registration Deadline Looms

Celtic are heading into one of the most important 24-hour periods of their summer transfer window, with the club working on a series of late deals while the clock ticks towards UEFA’s European registration deadline.

The Scottish champions have already accelerated their recruitment in recent days, but Wednesday, September 2, has become a particularly significant date.

While Scotland’s domestic transfer window remains open until 5pm BST on Thursday, September 3, Celtic face an earlier deadline if they want their new recruits available for their Europa League campaign. UEFA’s regulations state that List A for the league phase must be submitted by 23:59 CET on September 2 — equivalent to 10:59pm BST.

That has created an extraordinary situation for Celtic.

Deals that could technically be completed domestically on Thursday may no longer be able to help the club in Europe.

And with several potential arrivals being worked on simultaneously, every minute matters.

The SFA deadline question

The Scottish Football Association is naturally at the centre of the registration process because its registration department administers player registrations in Scottish football and operates FIFA’s Transfer Matching System for international transfers.

However, there is an important distinction for Celtic supporters.

The SFA does not set UEFA’s European registration deadline.

The deadline for Celtic’s Europa League squad is determined by UEFA competition regulations.

For the 2026/27 Europa League, UEFA’s rules state that clubs must submit their List A by 23:59 CET on September 2 for the league phase onwards.

Scotland’s domestic window is a separate matter.

The Scottish Premiership window stays open until 5pm BST on September 3, two days after the English window closed.

So Celtic effectively have two clocks running at once.

Europe tonight. Scotland tomorrow.

That is why the current transfer situation feels so frantic.

Important note on the “SFA statement”

The graphic accompanying this story suggests that the SFA has issued a special deadline statement.

There is no evidence in the Scottish FA’s current public newsroom that such a special Celtic-specific statement has been issued. The SFA does confirm that its registration department handles player registrations and transfer administration, but the European deadline itself comes from UEFA.

That distinction matters.

The deadline pressure is very real — but supporters should not mistake a social-media graphic for an official SFA announcement.

Celtic’s transfer operation has gone into overdrive

The timing comes as Celtic attempt to complete a remarkable burst of recruitment.

Oliver Sørensen has already arrived from Parma on a season-long loan, with Celtic officially announcing the Danish midfielder’s arrival on September 1.

But the club appears determined to do considerably more.

According to recent reporting, Celtic have been working on several deals simultaneously, with Torino midfielder Gvidas Gineitis among the most important targets.

STV reported that Celtic were close to reaching an agreement for the Lithuanian international after a breakthrough in negotiations, with Gineitis keen on a move to Glasgow.

That would be a major development for the Hoops.

Celtic have just lost Reo Hatate, with the club confirming his departure on September 2.

Replacing a player of Hatate’s quality was always going to be difficult, and Gineitis has emerged as one of the leading candidates to strengthen the midfield.

Sam Johnstone has already strengthened the squad

Another piece of the late Celtic operation has also fallen into place.

Experienced goalkeeper Sam Johnstone has joined Celtic from Wolves on a season-long loan, according to the latest reporting.

The move gives Celtic additional experience and competition in the goalkeeping department.

It is particularly significant because goalkeeper was one of the positions Celtic had been expected to address during the summer.

Johnstone arrives with extensive English football experience and international experience with England, making him considerably more than simply an emergency squad option.

For Martin O’Neill, having another experienced goalkeeper available could prove valuable during a season involving domestic competition and European football.

Shim Mheuka is another major piece of the puzzle

Then there is the Chelsea youngster.

Shim Mheuka has emerged as one of the most exciting attacking additions Celtic are attempting to make.

The 18-year-old striker travelled to Glasgow ahead of completing his proposed loan move from Chelsea, with Sky Sports reporting his arrival in Scotland on September 1.

That is significant because Celtic are looking for additional attacking options, and Mheuka is viewed as a player with considerable potential.

The move would give him the opportunity to gain senior experience while giving Celtic another option in the forward line.

And importantly, the current reporting does not suggest that Mheuka has refused a medical.

Quite the opposite.

He travelled to Glasgow to complete the move.

That is worth stressing because deadline-day rumours can quickly become distorted on social media.

Celtic are also pushing for defensive reinforcements

The transfer activity does not end in midfield or attack.

Celtic have also been working on defensive additions, with Feyenoord’s Jordan Lotomba reportedly travelling to Scotland to complete a medical and finalise a potential move.

The Swiss international is primarily a right-back but can operate elsewhere across the defence.

That versatility could be extremely useful for Celtic.

The club currently has Alistair Johnston, Anthony Ralston and Colby Donovan among its defensive options, while Kieran Tierney’s fitness situation has also increased the need for greater depth. Celtic’s current first-team squad confirms those defensive options.

Adding a player capable of covering multiple positions could therefore make sense for O’Neill.

Landon Emenalo situation adds another twist

Chelsea left-back Landon Emenalo has also been linked with a move to Celtic.

Reports indicate that Celtic have been working on a season-long loan for the youngster, with the deal having encountered complications.

That is another reason why the final hours are so important.

Celtic are not simply waiting to see what happens with one player.

They are attempting to move several negotiations forward at the same time.

And if even one collapses, attention can immediately shift towards another target.

Joel van den Berg is also on Celtic’s radar

PSV midfielder Joel van den Berg has been another name heavily connected with Celtic’s late recruitment push.

Recent reports indicated that Van den Berg, Sørensen and Johnstone were all present around Celtic’s training base as the club worked to progress its business.

The potential addition of Van den Berg would further change the complexion of Celtic’s midfield.

Combined with Sørensen and the pursuit of Gineitis, it shows just how seriously the club is attempting to rebuild that area following recent departures.

Why tonight is so important

This is where everything comes together.

Celtic can still conduct domestic transfer business after Wednesday.

But if a new signing is not properly registered with UEFA by the European deadline, that player could miss out on the club’s Europa League squad.

UEFA’s regulations are explicit: List A for the league phase must be submitted by 23:59 CET on September 2.

That means Celtic’s European clock is effectively ticking down to 10:59pm UK time tonight.

The Scottish domestic deadline, meanwhile, does not arrive until 5pm Thursday.

So Celtic could potentially complete a domestic signing after their European deadline — but that would not necessarily solve the immediate problem of getting that player into their Europa League squad.

That distinction could become crucial.

Celtic fans have every reason to be watching closely

The sheer number of potential deals makes this one of the most fascinating periods of the window for Celtic supporters.

Sørensen is already through the door.

Johnstone has arrived.

Mheuka is in Glasgow.

Lotomba is reportedly heading towards a medical.

Gineitis remains a major target.

Van den Berg has been linked.

Emenalo remains another possibility.

And Celtic could yet spring another surprise before the paperwork is finally completed.

The club’s official website itself describes the current week as a busy one, while its latest updates confirm Sørensen’s arrival and Hatate’s departure.

The important thing is that Celtic are no longer simply discussing potential reinforcements.

Deals are actually happening.

The pressure is now firmly on Celtic

For O’Neill and the recruitment team, the challenge is straightforward: get the right deals completed without allowing the pressure of the clock to force mistakes.

There is little room for hesitation.

A medical issue could delay a deal.

Negotiations could break down.

Paperwork could take longer than expected.

A player could arrive in Scotland but still miss the European registration cut-off if everything is not completed in time.

That is the nature of football’s transfer window.

And Celtic are now right in the middle of it.

The Scottish window may remain open until Thursday afternoon, but for supporters hoping to see the new recruits involved in Europe, Wednesday night is the deadline that really matters.

So while the viral claim of an SFA “special deadline statement” should be treated cautiously, the underlying drama is absolutely genuine.

Celtic are racing against the clock — and several major transfers could be decided before the European registration deadline closes.

For the Hoops support, the next few hours could be absolutely massive.

One deal confirmed. Another medical. Another negotiation. Another phone call.

And before the night is over, Celtic could look like a very different team. 🍀
