Police Statement Issued Ahead of Sunderland’s Premier League Clash With Brentford
Sunderland and Brentford supporters are preparing for a highly competitive Premier League meeting at the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday, September 5th, as both teams aim to continue their encouraging starts to the 2026/27 season.
The match is an important occasion for the Black Cats, who are back in the Premier League following an outstanding 2025/26 campaign that earned them qualification for the Europa League. Régis Le Bris’ team recorded their first victory of the new season last weekend, securing a controlled 1-0 win against Fulham after suffering defeat to Ipswich Town on the opening day.
Brentford have also begun the campaign strongly under Keith Andrews. The Bees opened their season with a convincing 3-0 victory over Tottenham before playing out a 1-1 draw against Leeds United.
However, Brentford will be without midfielder Mathias Jensen for the fixture because of a minor issue. Manager Keith Andrews has confirmed that the Dane will miss Saturday’s match and could also be unavailable for next week’s game. Sepp van den Berg, meanwhile, remains on the road to recovery from a groin injury and is expected to return following the international break.
Sunderland have strengthened their squad with several deadline-day additions, including Lyon winger Malick Fofana, who could potentially make his debut for the Black Cats.
The club’s impressive campaign last season was underpinned by a disciplined defensive record. Sunderland conceded just 48 goals, giving them the fourth-best defensive record in the division, and the early signs suggest Le Bris’ side are continuing to rely heavily on that defensive strength.
Ahead of the fixture, the Metropolitan Police have confirmed that they are working closely with both clubs to help maintain the safety of supporters attending the match.
The encounter has attracted considerable attention, particularly given the competitive nature of previous meetings between the two sides. Their most recent clash came in January 2026, when Brentford recorded a 3-0 home victory over Sunderland in the Premier League.
Brentford currently sit fifth in the early Premier League table, while Sunderland occupy 11th place. Saturday’s fixture is therefore expected to provide an intriguing tactical contest, with the Bees’ attacking threat set to face Sunderland’s resilient defensive approach.
Kick-off at the Gtech Community Stadium is scheduled for 3pm BST.
