Paraguayan midfielder Matías Galarza has handed in a formal transfer request at River Plate, sparking a three-way battle among Premier League clubs for his signature this summer.
The 24-year-old, who recently returned from a loan spell at Atlanta United, is understood to have informed River Plate of his desire to move to Europe. Sources close to the player confirm he is seeking a new challenge after impressing during his time in MLS and with the Paraguay national team.
Galarza said:
“I feel ready for the next step in my career. I want to test myself in one of the strongest leagues in the world and play regular football at the highest level. I have spoken with the club and made my position clear.”
Sunderland are among the clubs monitoring the situation closely. Head coach Régis Le Bris is believed to view Galarza as a strong option to add energy and creativity in midfield as the Black Cats prepare for the Premier League and European football.
However, two other Premier League sides have also entered the race, creating intense competition for the player’s signature. River Plate are expected to demand a fee in the region of €4.5–5 million, with interest also previously reported from clubs in Greece, Spain, Italy and France.
Galarza added:
“I am grateful for everything River Plate have done for me, but I believe the time is right for a change. I want to join a club where I can develop further and contribute immediately.”
Sunderland’s recruitment team is understood to be assessing the situation carefully while balancing other targets. Whether the Black Cats can win the race remains to be seen, but Galarza’s decision to push for a move has significantly increased the urgency surrounding any potential deal.
