Former England and Celtic goalkeeper Joe Hart left a BBC studio panel momentarily silent after delivering a strikingly honest assessment of Derek McInnes and the current Rangers squad.
Speaking during a live discussion on the state of Scottish football, Hart did not hold back when asked about the early weeks of the McInnes era at Ibrox. His comments, which mixed praise with pointed criticism, sparked immediate reaction both in the studio and among supporters online.
Hart said:
“Derek is a proper football man. He knows the Scottish game inside out and he will get the maximum out of the players he has. But looking at that Rangers team right now, there are still too many players who look like they are waiting for someone else to take responsibility.”
The former Celtic number one continued:
“You can see the organisation improving and the work rate is there, but the quality in key moments is still missing. McInnes needs more leaders on the pitch and he needs them quickly. Some of those players have been at the club long enough to know what is expected at Rangers. At the moment, not enough of them are showing it.”
The panel appeared taken aback by the directness of the remarks. One co-host attempted to soften the criticism, but Hart stood by his view.
“I’m not saying they are bad players,” he added. “I’m saying the standards at that club are higher than what we are seeing in certain games. Derek will demand more. The question is whether every player in that dressing room is ready to meet that demand.”

McInnes has already begun reshaping the squad with several new arrivals, yet the manager himself has publicly urged the club to accelerate further transfer business. He has spoken about the need for new signings to “land soon” as the team balances domestic and European commitments.
Hart’s intervention has divided opinion. Some Rangers supporters feel the former goalkeeper, given his Celtic background, was always likely to be critical. Others concede that his assessment of leadership and consistency touches on issues that have frustrated the fanbase for some time.
