Former Celtic defender Mark Wilson believes the Scottish champions still have plenty of work to do before they can compete with Europe’s elite, despite opening their Premiership campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Dundee.
Speaking after the match, Wilson praised Celtic’s style of play and acknowledged the quality throughout the squad, but insisted the performance highlighted why they are not yet ready for the demands of the UEFA Champions League.

Wilson argued that while Celtic remain the strongest team domestically, the intensity, speed and clinical quality required in Europe’s biggest competition are on another level.

Although Benjamin Nygren’s second-half goal secured all three points, Wilson felt the performance exposed areas that Martin O’Neill’s side must improve before facing continental heavyweights.
His comments have already divided supporters. Some fans agreed that Celtic still need reinforcements and sharper performances to make an impact in Europe, while others believe it is far too early to judge after just one league match and that the team will improve as new signings settle.
