The Sky Blues have agreed a record-breaking £23.1m deal for Ghana international Caleb Yirenkyi, smashing their transfer record for the SECOND time this summer.

Coventry City are continuing their stunning squad rebuild ahead of their return to the Premier League this season – and they’ve just pulled off a MASSIVE transfer coup. The Sky Blues have agreed a record-breaking £23.1m deal for Ghana international Caleb Yirenkyi, making him the most expensive player in the club’s history.
Just weeks after breaking their transfer record to sign goalkeeper Carl Rushworth for £22.5m, Coventry have done it AGAIN. The Midlands club are NOT messing about.
THE RECORD-BREAKING DEAL
According to Danish outlet Tipsbladet, Coventry have agreed to pay FC Nordsjælland €27m (£23.1m) for the 20-year-old Ghanaian midfielder, with an additional €3m in add-ons. The deal will be a record transfer for the Danish Superliga and the highest fee a club has ever received in the division.
Yirenkyi is set to sign a long-term contract at the CBS Arena and has already pencilled in a medical. The player is believed to have chosen Coventry because of the guarantee of first-team football and the fact he has been told he will have an important role in the team.
THE PLAYER
Yirenkyi is a product of the famous Right to Dream academy – the same system that produced Manchester United’s Patrick Dorgu and Tottenham star Mohammed Kudus. The 20-year-old has earned rave reviews for his displays in Denmark and has been compared to compatriot Michael Essien for his physical and technical attributes.
The midfielder featured for the Black Stars at the World Cup and scored the winner for Ghana in their last-gasp group stage win against Panama [0†L30-L32]. His performances on the biggest stage caught the attention of clubs across Europe – but Coventry have won the race.
What the fans don’t know is that Yirenkyi’s signing was nearly hijacked by THREE Premier League clubs at the last minute.
Sources close to the player have revealed that Crystal Palace, Everton and Brentford all made late approaches to Nordsjælland in an attempt to hijack the deal. But the player rejected them ALL – because he was convinced by Frank Lampard’s vision for Coventry.
The former Chelsea boss personally called Yirenkyi to convince him to join the Sky Blues, telling him he would be a “key player” and that Coventry are building something special.
