Sky Sports pundit and former Rangers striker Kris Boyd left colleagues and viewers stunned after delivering a blistering assessment of Nottingham Forest’s decision to appoint Oliver Glasner as their new head coach.
The outspoken Scottish pundit did not hold back when the conversation turned to the Austrian’s arrival at the City Ground. Boyd’s comments, delivered with characteristic directness, immediately sparked debate and have since dominated discussion among Forest supporters.
“I have respect for what Oliver Glasner did at Crystal Palace,” Boyd said. “He won a trophy there and he’s a decent coach. But when I look at Nottingham Forest the history of that club, the pressure that comes with it, and the way the ownership operates I just don’t think he is the right man for the job.”
Boyd continued:
“Forest need a strong personality who can handle the chaos that sometimes surrounds the place. They need someone who can stand up to the scrutiny, deal with the expectations, and keep everyone pulling in the same direction. Glasner is organised and tactically sound, but I’m not convinced he has the character or the presence required to lead a club like Nottingham Forest through what is always a demanding environment.”
The remarks come very early in Glasner’s tenure. The former Crystal Palace manager only took charge in July following the departure of Vítor Pereira, signing a three-year contract with the clear aim of restoring stability and pushing the club back towards European contention. Glasner has spoken positively about the ambition of owner Evangelos Marinakis and has already started implementing his methods in pre-season.
Boyd, however, remains firmly unconvinced by the appointment.
“We’ve seen too many managers come and go at that club in a short space of time,” he added. “That tells you something. Appointing another coach who might not be equipped for the unique pressures at Forest risks more of the same. They need someone who can stamp their authority quickly and carry the supporters with them. I’m not sure Glasner is that figure.”
The reaction has been immediate. Many Nottingham Forest fans have criticised Boyd for judging the new manager so early, arguing that the Austrian deserves time to put his ideas across. Others, tired of the constant changes in the dugout, have quietly conceded that the pundit’s concerns about leadership and long-term stability reflect a frustration felt by parts of the support.
One experienced observer noted:
“Kris Boyd has never been afraid to say what he thinks. Whether you agree with him or not, he has put a spotlight on the biggest issue Forest have faced in recent seasons — the lack of continuity. The pressure is now on Glasner to prove those doubts wrong.”
Glasner has not publicly responded. Those close to the club are understood to be focused on preparations for the new season rather than engaging with external criticism. The Austrian arrives with a solid reputation from his successful spells in Germany and at Crystal Palace, where he delivered a major trophy and earned respect for his clear, organised style of play.
Boyd finished with a challenge directed at the new Forest boss:
“If Glasner is the right man, he’ll show it on the pitch. Results and performances will answer the critics. But from where I’m sitting right now, I have serious doubts that he is the long-term solution Forest need.”
The strong intervention from one of the most forthright voices in the game has added unexpected early pressure to Glasner’s reign at the City Ground. With the Premier League season fast approaching, the former Palace manager will be determined to silence the sceptics — starting with the players and supporters who will ultimately decide whether Boyd’s judgement proves accurate.
For Nottingham Forest, the search for lasting stability goes on. Whether Oliver Glasner is the man to finally provide it remains the central question as the new campaign begins.
