According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Ajax have reached an agreement to sign Nigerian striker Tolu Arokodare from Wolves, bringing an end to what has been a difficult spell for the forward at Molineux. The Dutch giants will initially take the 25-year-old on loan, with the deal including an option to make the move permanent for €20 million.
The transfer comes just weeks after Arokodare found himself at the center of a training-ground incident that reportedly led Wolves to cancel a scheduled training session. While the situation raised questions about the striker’s future at the club, both parties have now agreed on a solution, with Ajax emerging as the destination for the Nigerian international.
Arokodare’s move also marks a return to the Low Countries, where he enjoyed the most productive period of his career. Before joining Wolves, he established himself as one of the Belgian Pro League’s most dangerous forwards with Genk, who signed him as the replacement for fellow Nigerian striker Paul Onuachu following his transfer to Southampton.
The towering forward made a modest start to life at Genk, scoring two goals in 11 appearances during his first six months at the club. However, he quickly developed into a consistent goalscorer over the next two campaigns. During the 2023/24 season, Arokodare netted 15 goals in 52 appearances across all competitions before taking his game to another level the following season, producing an impressive return of 23 goals in just 45 matches.
Those performances convinced Wolves to bring him to England in 2025, hoping he could carry his prolific form into the Premier League. Despite flashes of his quality, Arokodare struggled to find the same consistency in front of goal. He finished his time at Molineux with six goals in 38 appearances, falling short of the expectations created by his exploits in Belgium.
With opportunities becoming increasingly limited and his future at Wolves uncertain, a move away has long appeared the most likely outcome. Ajax have now secured his signature on an initial loan agreement, giving the striker the chance to revive his career in familiar surroundings while providing the Dutch club with the option to complete a permanent transfer for €20 million if he impresses during his spell in Amsterdam.
