Newcastle United Eye £30m Goalkeeper as Nick Pope Exit Nears
Newcastle United have already completed four signings this summer, but the club is still looking to strengthen key areas before the transfer window closes. While the arrivals have focused on promising young talent, there is still a need for more experienced quality within Eddie Howe’s squad.
One position that could soon require attention is goalkeeper. Nick Pope has been strongly linked with a move away from St James’ Park, with just one year remaining on his current contract. Ipswich Town are reportedly interested in signing the 34-year-old, raising the possibility that Newcastle could be searching for a new first-choice goalkeeper.
According to Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie, Newcastle admire SC Braga goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek. The Magpies are monitoring the 24-year-old closely, although no formal offer has been submitted at this stage.
Hornicek is believed to have a £30 million release clause in his contract and has attracted interest from several Premier League clubs. The Czech goalkeeper has reportedly already rejected an approach from Hull City as he waits for a bigger opportunity.
Despite the sizeable price tag, Newcastle may not view the fee as a major obstacle if they believe Hornicek is the right long-term solution. At just 24, he fits the club’s recruitment strategy and could potentially secure the goalkeeping position for many years.
Newcastle had spent much of the summer pursuing Manchester City’s James Trafford, who was seen as the club’s preferred option. However, recent reports suggest Trafford is now leaning towards a move to Leeds United, leaving Newcastle to explore alternative targets.
Trafford’s experience in English football made him an attractive candidate, and his time at Manchester City added further appeal despite serving primarily as a backup. His expected move elsewhere has forced Newcastle to consider other options.
Hornicek now appears to be among the leading names on the Magpies’ shortlist. While he has impressed during his time with Braga, a move from the Portuguese top flight to the Premier League would represent a significant step up.
Newcastle’s recruitment team will now have to decide whether Hornicek has the qualities needed to make that transition successfully, especially if Pope completes a move away before the end of the transfer window.
